Famke Janssen first played Jean Grey in 2000's X-Men and, following the mutant's apparent demise in X2: X-Men United, she returned as a villain in the poorly-received X-Men: The Last Stand.
Cameos in The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past followed, and that seemed to be it for Janssen's take on Jean.
Rumours have long swirled about us seeing the X-Men in Deadpool & Wolverine; the Merc with the Mouth's franchise has always played a little fast and loose with continuity (Deadpool 2 featured a cameo from the prequel-era characters) and we'd bet on this movie's X-Men having ties to the Beast and Binary we met in The Marvels' mid-credits scene.
Either way, some familiar mutant faces are bound to show up, with James Marsden's Cyclops rumoured to appear and Sir Patrick Stewart all but confirming he'll return as Professor X.
Unfortunately, it sounds like Janssen's Jean won't be joining them.
Talking to Screen Geek about her role in Boy Kills World, the actress said, "I’m not in [Deadpool & Wolverine]. No. Everybody keeps asking. So, at some point, I was like, 'Wait, am I in Deadpool, and I just don’t know it yet?' But, no. I’m not. No, no."
She may be fudging the truth to avoid spoiling anything but that's a pretty firm no. Ultimately, we likely won't find out whether she's shot anything until sitting down to watch Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters this summer.
"I’m about to embark on a huge Netflix project. And we’re shooting it in Amsterdam for six months," Janssen said of what's next for her. "It’s called 'Amsterdam Empire.' In my own language, for the first time, Dutch. I’ve never acted in my language before. I left when I was 17 and didn’t start acting until I came to the States."
"Yeah, I mean, it’s a great character. It’s a great show. It’s very different; it’s a departure for me, so I’m excited."
Shawn Levy directs Deadpool & Wolverine, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen. The movie is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy.
The trades have confirmed that Jennifer Garner will reprise her role as Elektra, with Wesley Snipes, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Dafne Keen, Channing Tatum, Blake Lively and, as we mentioned above, even singer Taylor Swift among those rumoured to make an appearance.
Kevin Feige, Reynolds, Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg and Jonathon Komack Martin serving as executive producers.
Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in theaters on July 26.
