Disney is developing 2002's animated adventure Lilo & Stitch as its next live-action adaptation. Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu is in negotiations to helm the project, which is being developed as a possible feature for the Disney+ streaming service.
Rideback's Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are producing, while Mike Van Waes wrote the current draft of the script. A search is said to be underway to find another writer to work with Chu.
Lilo & Stitch tells the story of a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo Pelekai who forms a bond with a blue alien called Experiment 626, who was engineered to be a force of destruction. It wasn't considered one of the Mouse House's bigger hits from a box office standpoint, but it remains a very popular entry in Disney's library, having spawned three direct-to-video sequels and a 2003 TV series.
Though a Disney+ debut is a possibility, it sounds like a theatrical release is also on the table.
Chu exec produced and directed episodes of Apple show Home Before Dark, and we recently learned that he will helm the pilot for the new Disney+ Willow series.
