MULAN Prepares For Battle In A New Image From Disney's Upcoming Live-Action Remake

Most of Disney's previous live-action remakes have stuck pretty close (arguably too close) to the original animated movies that inspired them, but Mulan looks set to break tradition with a very different retelling of the Chinese legend.

With no songs, no dragon sidekick and a far more serious tone, producer Jason Reed tells Empire that fans should expect something closer to a David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia) or Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai) historical epic.

Check out a new image of star Liu Yifei armored-up and posing as a man to fight with the Imperial Army.  We also have the first trailer, poster and all previous stills.

In addition to Liu, the film will star Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) as Böri Khan, Yoson An (Ghost Bride) as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li (Curse of the Golden Flower) as Xianniang and Jet Li (Hero) as The Emperor.

I'm still really on the fence about this one. The teaser looked good, but no Mushu makes me hesitant and the rumor of no songs is a hard bummer too.

@RancidBane - Original composer died, a Great One, too, rigt up there with John Williams. I wondered if it was gonna redo the songs without Jerry Goldsmith and didn't quite like the idea, so I'm actually kinda glad they're going for a more historical drama. In fact, I wish they generally went the more dramatic route in these live action remakes, like Aladdin. Aladdin could potentially be a sprawling masterpiece as a drama/historical/fantasy/adventure in the hands of someone like Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood, 1492) or same director Guy Ritchie. Mind you, I did really like Aladdin, cartoon and remake.
