PINOCCHIO Live-Action Remake Adds Joseph Gordon-Levitt As Jiminy Cricket & Cynthia Erivo As The Blue Fairy

Disney's upcoming live-action take on Pinocchio has filled two more key roles, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises, Looper) joining the cast as Jiminy Cricket, and Cynthia Ervio (Widows, The Outsider) set to play the Blue Fairy.

Though a fairly minor character in Carlo Collodi's original story, Jiminy had a much larger role in the animated classic, serving as Pinocchio's official "conscience." Likewise, the Blue Fairy appeared at pivotal moments in an attempt to keep the little fella on the straight and narrow.

THR has also revealed that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Flora and Ulysses) will provide the voice of the titular wooden boy, while Keegan-Michael Key (The Predator) will bring life to Honest John. Lorraine Bracco (Goodfellas, The Sopranos) is also on board as a new character, Sofia the Seagull.

They join Tom Hanks as Pinocchio's father/creator Geppetto, and Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast) as The Coachman.

Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis will helm the project, and also co-wrote the script with Chris Weitz. No release date has been set, but the movie is expected to commence production in the UK later this month.

Like Lady and the Tramp, Pinocchio will skip theatres and head straight to Disney+.

I remember watching Widows and when Cynthia Erivo came on screen being amazed by how muscular she was, she looked fantastic.
Good to see an actress in such shape

Pretty good cast for this one. Ervio was great in Bad Times at El Royale.

Cynthia Ervio is one of my favorite up and coming actors. Male or female - she’s fantastic in everything I’ve seen her in.

Glad she’s getting that Disney money 💰

Love JGL, and Erivo was great in Bad Times.

I just can't bring myself to get excited for this. I think everything that can be done with the Pinocchio story has been done, and when Zemeckis misses, he misses HUGE.

Same. Cool cast. Can’t behind another Pinocchio flick and who knows if Zemeckis has any juice left.

@regularmovieguy - The movie it kept reminding me of was The Lovely Bones, where you had a filmmaker who's spent so many years making big, epic movies with all these grand effects and set pieces, and then they try to go back to making a smaller-scale movie with a story that's pretty tragic, but they think it's not good enough without those effects and set pieces from their big movies, and so they crowbar them in, and they just don't fit at all, and the whole movie ends up feeling disjointed, and even kind of offensive given the material of the story.

Very solid cast so far & decent director. I’m sure it’s going to tone it down from the animated version, like Dumbo did, but there’s ways to make a fun new movie out of the book. I want to hold on to hope that it turns out good.
