TOY STORY 5: Pixar CCO Justifies Upcoming Sequel And Promises The Movie Will Surprise Fans

The announcement that Disney is moving forward with a new Toy Story movie raised some eyebrows, and Pixar's Chief Creative Officer has now justified its existence and promised it will surprise fans...

Disney is looking to curb its spending and start delivering bigger profits to shareholders, hence why returning CEO Bob Iger recently confirmed plans to revisit the Frozen and Toy Story franchises in theaters.

Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5 are guaranteed $1 billion hits, so the studio returning to those wells is hardly surprising. There has been something of a mixed response about the latter, though, especially when both Toy Story 3 and 4 ended on a definitive note that felt like the right place to end the franchise.

In a recent interview with The Wrap (via Toonado.com), Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter chose his words carefully when asked about the decision to make another Toy Story movie.

"The thing we’ve been really trying to do, and this has been the case for a while, is we’ve been looking at them a little bit like, 'Okay, we're not planning for the future.' When we made the first 'Toy Story,' we had no idea there would be a 'Toy Story 2.' We’re just trying to make this movie."

"But that in making the movie, it takes you places, unexpected places, which is what I love about the creative process," Docter continues. "If I knew exactly what I was doing when I started making a movie, there’d kind of be no point in making it. I discover so much along the way."

That doesn't really feel like an answer to the question, and when Docter was pushed for details on the upcoming fifth instalment, he teased: "I think it’ll be surprising. It’s got some really cool stuff that you haven’t seen before."

How the movie will surprise us remains to be seen, though we're sure Woody and Buzz will be reunited. Toy Story 5 doesn't have a release date, but production on the movie is clearly well underway.

The absolute definition of "cash grab".

I really wish they would leave it now. I really liked the 4th one but if they plan on reuniting Woody and Buzz it would make the 4th films ending pointless

@Solarkalel85 - This is just a really fascinating point people bring up. I’ve had big things happen in life and had to say big goodbyes. But when life changed and i got the chance to see them again, i never thought that seeing them would make my last goodbye pointless. I’m just happy to see my friend

All of this, with Disney's Frozen and Zootopia sequels, just screams "bunch of our recent movies underperformed or went to straight to streaming, so we desperately need guaranteed hits" to me.

Good luck making this work without Tom Hanks, lol

4th film was a massive downgrade from the 3rd one, and after trying to watch Lightyear, I'll just pass.

End it like "Sausage Party". That would be a surprise.

They should do a crossover with Chucky

The third movie was the perfect ending. Emotional, touching and fitting.

Four was a lackluster, forces and boring story.

But since they are making 5 then make them being sold on EBay and the collectors item toys are being bid on and sold off.
They can then tie that into a “slave auction” or “holocaust” type analogy.

Make it dark and dramatic then have the toys revolt and try to escape the homes of those who bought them…and work to reunite.

I've got a feeling the 'Suprise' of Toy Story 5, will be that the movie will be set years later.

I'm guessing it will be about a child finding out their toys are alive.

It's rare enough to make a great trilogy, but they just had to get greedy and ruin it. If they wanted to continue the Toy Story franchise after 3, they should have just stuck to doing Toy Story Toons and TV specials. Those fun simple stories every year or two were just enough to satisfy anyone who wanted to jump back into the Toy Story world for a little without having to sit through a movie with some big ridiculous plot that messes with character arcs just for the sake of having "movie worthy stakes".

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 -

Agreed. In my mind toy story is a trilogy and the fourth movie is an optional epilogue

My interest in Toy Story ended with three (it ended perfectly). I have no desire to see part 4, or 5 for that matter.
