THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER - Amazon Prime Video Has Already Started Work On Season 3

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's showrunners have signed a new deal with Amazon Prime Video, part of which involves them making a start on the show's third season. Find more details here...

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was meant to be Prime Video's Game of Thrones-beater, with the streamer spending enough for it to reportedly become the most expensive TV series ever made.

When the small screen prequel debuted in September 2022, it delivered Prime Video's biggest-ever debut in what Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke called "a very culturally defining moment" for the company. However, we later found out that The Rings of Power lost a significant number of viewers as the season progressed.

The show had only a 37% completion rate in the U.S. Overseas, only 45% of people finished the series, with 50% typically deemed an okay, but far from desired, result.

Production on season 2 has moved from New Zealand to the UK (likely reducing costs) and we anticipate the series returning to our screens later this year. Now, though, The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) reveals season 3 is already in the works after showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne signed a new three-year deal with the streamer.

As well as confirming those plans for The Rings of Power season 2 to premiere in 2024, the trade adds that, "while a third season hasn’t officially been ordered and a writers room has not yet opened, the showrunners have started to break the initial story outline."

While it's still early days, this bodes well for The Lord of the Rings' future on television. It's possible the streamer is waiting to see how season 2 does before moving forward with a third batch of episodes, but they're putting a lot into this property so won't be giving up if they don't have to!

Here's a statement from Vernon Sanders, Head of Television, Amazon MGM Studios:

"We began this remarkable journey with JD and Patrick more than five and a half years ago and have never looked back. We continue to be amazed by the scope and scale of their vision and the enormous global success achieved by The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in its record-breaking first season. We can’t wait for Prime Video customers to experience the epic adventure and high-stakes drama that JD and Patrick are continuing to build throughout season two and beyond. Naturally, the studio is thrilled to extend our overall deal with these brilliant creative minds as they continue to deliver on their passion for great storytelling."

Talking last year about those disappointing viewing figures, Salke said, "This desire to paint the show as anything less than a success p it’s not reflective of any conversation I’m having internally." It seems the upcoming second season will have more dramatic story turns as she added, "That’s a huge opportunity for us. The first season required a lot of setting up."

With the Sauron mystery now solved, here's hoping the iconic villain finally takes centre stage in season 2 and beyond...

I gotta say, amazon is probably the number one studio for the phrase "they must not like money".

They pay people like phoebe waller bridges $20 million a year for projects that go nowhere (and then renew their contracts), they bought the rights to the movie air for more money than it'd cost to make the film, and now they're doubling and tripling down on a show that's an objective failure by their own standards.

@Origame - true. I am so disappointed in this show. All they had to do is give Peter Jackson all the money and creative freedom he wants.

But i guess he is not on board with the dei agenda? I am not sure, just guessing

@vectorsigma - worked for house of dragons, they just trying to copy HBO's success.

@Origame - Can't get peter jackson as he wants to make films, not tv shows. WB still owns the movie rights I think.

@mastakilla39 - ive heard about the news amazon ignoring pj to be a consultant or somethibg like that. The current showrunners are not good imo

@McMurdo - never said it was BAD, thats why Amazon is trying to copy them. No 1 is really bitching about the DEI in HoD if it comes out good. TROP got good ratings too, must be doing well if its been greenlit for 5 - 6 seasons.

@mastakilla39 - the DEI in House of Dragon isn't blatantly bad. It isn't simply thrown in for the sake of points. It fits the world for the most part and is done well. Rings of Power......well the opposite can be said.

@Origame - The only good thing they've done imo was to pick up The Expanse, but it was just because Bezos liked the show.

I know the show had a mixed response amongst fans (especially on here) but I found S1 enjoyable overall though with room for improvement of course…

Looking forward to seeing how the story & arcs of the various characters continue (especially Charlie Vickers Sauron who was a personal favorite of mine)!!.

Hopefully the show gets better & better!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Have to agree with you on this one. I too did enjoy the first season, although I didn't think it really kicked into high gear until the final 3 or 4 episodes of the season. Definitely looking forward to the next season and I have to second your Charlie Vickers comment. His Sauron was definitely one of the highlights of the show.

@Mugens - yeah

Like pretty much any ensemble show , you will have storylines you are more interested in than others which was the case here aswell.

He was a highlight though I think my favorites were the Elrond & Durin stuff , I liked their friendship

Remember when Amazon changed their entire review system and was deleting and locking people out from leaving reviews for 72 hours? You used to be able to watch something and leave a review there till they started the narrative that the show was being review bombed and anyone not loving and praising it was racist, sexist, and were even called evil by some. I forget what RT did but IMDB were deleting user reviews and also changed their system a few different ways to hide the real reactions from viewers. And even this site had all those really nice articles about how the fans are bad because the studio said so, and they used "review bombing" as their proof.

More than a few people blocked me here and were extremely mean to others because they couldn't handle the truth that the review bomb narrative was an outright lie from the very beginning.

Kinda figured they had a whole multi-season story planned. Season 1 was forging the Rings of Power, 2 could be the War of Elves and Sauron, 3 the drowning of Numenor, 4 the fonding of Andor and Gondlr, and 5 the Last Alliance of Men and Elves and the destruction of Khazad Dum.

TheVisionary25 - 3/1/2024, 7:14 AM
@bkmeijer1 - apparently they had pitched all 5 seasons beforehand to Amazon.

@TheVisionary25 - had no idea they pitched 5 seasons, but I guess they atleast had an overarching story then. Maybe even one that lines up with my suggestion

It’s odd how good Amazon is at adapting comics and how bad they are at adapting fantasy.

I am convicted about this show, on the one hand it's completely terrible and sh1ts on everything that I love but on the other hand it's completely terrible and sh1ts on everything that I love.

@harryba11zack - it had a few moments but it's hard to overlook the huge dump with the DQ Curl and a shouldering cigarette sticking out of it that they dropped on my childhood.

Season 1 might have been better had it actually been about the forging of the rings of power. But building a Second Age show around Galadriel’s beef with Sauron on the one hand and a halfhearted Game of Thrones-lite bastardization of Peter Jackson’s trilogy on the other hand was an entirely misguided approach (one that screams corporate cash grab). I’m not sure how the rest of the show can course correct at this point. With the foundation ruined, the rest of the story is doomed as well.

ShellHead - 3/1/2024, 11:09 AM
Lmao but I thought the woke mind virus ruined this show and nobody liked it

(Never dropped below 4th place in ratings and is Prime's most viewed series ever)

But surely they'll change writing teams I mean c'mon everyone hates Galadriel and all the black characters for reasons they won't say

(Showrunners got picked up for a third season)

@ShellHead - People were explicitly clear what Galadriel was both unlikable and stupid as a character. We know you think everything is bigotry, but some stuff (like this show) just sucks.
