THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Follows SHE-HULK As Latest Victim Of Review Bombing By Trolls

The first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrived on Prime Video this past Friday, but the show is following She-Hulk: Attorney at Law as the latest victim of review bombing...

The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that Prime Video has suspended user ratings for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for 72 hours so Amazon can make sure any submitted reviews are legitimate. The show is the latest target of online trolls who are review bombing the series across a number of platforms, including Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.

Despite boasting very positive reviews from critics, the pricey Amazon series has a "Rotten" 37% Audience Score on the review aggregator. This comes weeks after the same thing happened to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (targeted primarily because it has a female lead), so what's the issue this time?

Unfortunately, it appears to be because the series has a female lead and a lot of actors of colour. There have been arguments online that an elf should not be Black and that it makes no sense for a dwarf to have a darker skin tone because they live underground. We wish we were joking, but that's a legitimate issue for some "fans," and this sort of vile racism has become fairly prevalent online lately.

It's important to point out that not everyone who has left a negative review is a troll or racist, and there will be those who simply don't like what Prime Video has delivered with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The problem is, it's become all too commonplace for these so-called fans to attack TV shows and movies simply because they feature the sort of diversity that reflects the modern world. She-Hulk twerking has been treated like the worst thing ever, though you just know it would be hailed as an all-time great moment if it was Deadpool pulling off those moves.

In the case of this show, it's only right that Middle-earth isn't whitewashed, but not everyone can see past their own bigotry. IMDb is also said to have also started removing negative reviews, and while some will cry foul and call this "censorship," the fact is that incels and racists seem determined to spread their hateful opinions through review-bombing. As a result, this is what happens.

The first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are now streaming on Prime Video! We'd highly recommend checking them out.

We must respect the votes of the people. The critics are sometimes bought by the TV channels. If they don't like the series because it's bad or for any reason, it should be reflected without manipulation, cutting the votes.

The Sandman, shows the same diversity and instead people liked it, and this is reflected in the votes.

Every single show those trolls are doing the same thing over and over.

One day the show will be actually bad. Like, for real. Really bad and those trolls will be all right like a casual coincidence.

Oh, wait...

@MadThanos - so where were the trolls review bombing wandavision?

@Origame - Also why are the old days female heroes loved ? @MadThanos Im talking Buffy / Xena / Lara Croft theres unlimited examples. Also a lot of female & poc characters in Star Wars are beloved & liked. They are just not made by Disney just an FYI

@TheSuerJackAss - because they were... good? With no to very little injection of politics and personal beliefs.

TheSuerJackAss - 9/4/2022, 8:44 PM
@MadThanos - Honestly I would go as far as saying the politics & swapping are not the problems. The problem is when this is the marketing. The problem is not letting these shows & media stand on their own two feet. What She-Hulk & The Rings Are Power are doing ? Is anti consumer instead of letting them stand on their own. The audience learned from Ghostbusters: 2016 & The Last Jedi when projects like She-Hulk & The Rings Of Power do what they did. Look at House Of The Dragon. Yeah theres forced race swapping. But I dont think those guys did what She-Hulk & The Rings Of Power are doing. Thus theres interest there. The Sandman is another one

TheSuerJackAss - 9/4/2022, 8:46 PM
@MadThanos - At most with the House Of The Dragon show runners all we can certainly say are they are arrogant with their reasoning. But they never went out of their way & did what She-Hulk & The Rings Of Power are doing

@MadThanos - you guys are way more negative on this show than some other groups I’m in like the Ringerverse and Binge Mode. I guess it depends on what group adheres to whatever biases you may have good or bad. It confounds me. The only ones who know if these shows truly are hood and bad are the streaming services making them. All the review bombinv doesn’t matter if these enough people to continue to watch them thus justifying making more so this argument really remains to be seen…

“though you just know it would be hailed as an all-time great moment if it was Deadpool pulling off those moves“

Lol no….. no it wouldn’t. It would be just as stupid as She-Hulk

@Winston19 - if Deadpool 3 featured him twerking, they would've gone out of their way to make sure the moment matched that scene from she hulk and make it PART of a joke specifically to MAKE FUN OF the original she hulk scene.

@Winston19 - I haven’t watched ROP yet so I have no opinion. She-Hulk I have (episode 1 at least) and it was bad. And from what I’ve seen it’s gotten worse.

Why can’t people not like things? These people that claim that every time there’s a bad review that it’s caused by trolls are getting old. It’s like the overuse of a variety of negative terms - racist, homophobe, facist, groomer. Both sides do it. This hyperbolic name calling.

The biggest thing I’ve seen with the people who have been opposed to ROP is Tolkien purists. Not trolls, but people that wanted more source accuracy than what they got. I’m not a Tolkien scholar so I’ll judge the show based upon its merits alone.

@Origame -
To be fair, even that would be unlikely to be funny to many. The act of twerking in itself is more cringe than comedic.

Though you raise a good point with the Deadpool 3 remark... are they intentionally shoving in certain aspects so they can point to those instead later. Like they probably intended the twerking scene to mean something, but was the twerking scene added primarily so Deadpool 3 can reference it down the line and fans can go 'he made fun of something bad in the MCU'

As opposed of-course to critiques of other aspects of the MCU.

@Scarilian - I think the she hulk writers just suck at writing comedy.

@mountainman - ROP is way better then she hulk IMO. Still not LOTR good but so far I’m into it. I’m not a Tolkien scholar either so I’m watching it just as a fan of the movies

@Winston19 - I’ll get to it this week. I’m loving House of the Dragon so far so I’m going to have to shift my brain to a different type of fantasy story before I sit and watch it.
Winston19
Winston19 - 9/5/2022, 12:23 PM
@mountainman - oh 100% completely different and your expectations can’t be the same, HOD is far better. But middle earth is always fun to visit. I definitely can’t see me being attached to these characters like LOTR or GOT but again I’m still enjoying the fantasy world of it.
mountainman
mountainman - 9/5/2022, 12:43 PM
@Winston19 - I’ve heard what it has the look and feel of middle Earth, regardless of any issues with writing or acting. If it has the look and feel, that sounds good to me. I’ll probably be watching the first episode tonight. I’m not a Tolkien purist so i don’t think i’ll have issues with the things that some folks online have.
mountainman
mountainman - 9/5/2022, 12:44 PM
@Winston19 - Part of me wants to wait until a few more episodes drop since i’ve heard the story doesn’t really get going in the first two. I may wait until 4 or 5 have dropped and binge them. At least once the story shifts to Numinor.

House of the Dragon has hit the ground running right from the start though!
Winston19
Winston19 - 9/6/2022, 2:56 PM
@mountainman - I’d say start it next Friday to let things flesh out more. The world is beautiful but still not really attached to anyone yet.

Last nights episode was wild! Although I thought only Targaryens can ride dragons? That other dragon rider was from house Valyrian. Either way the show is starting off great. The time jump caught me a little off guard in the last episode. I’m oh she’s pregnant, then I’m like oh she already had a kid lol
