TOLKIEN Trailer Gives Us A Glimpse Into THE LORD OF THE RINGS Author's Own Fantasy World

Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer for Tolkien, which stars X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Mad Max: Fury Road actor Nicholas Hoult as the celebrated British author who wrote The Lord of The Rings.

The biopic will chart the early life of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and his experiences in World War I, but from the looks of this teaser it will also delve into the fantasy world the writer would often escape to in his own head, which would eventually inspire him to create Middle-Earth and all of the characters we know and love from his series of epic novels.

Directed by Finnish filmmaker Dome Karukoski and written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford, Tolkien also stars Lily Collins, Tom Glynn-Carney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson and Derek Jacobi. The film is set for release on May 10.

I wonder who's playing C.S. Lewis?

@TheIronDuck - It depends on if they tell that part of his story. The movie will be about his early life. Tolkien was 45 when he started writing LotR. He read LotR to the Inklings (including C.S. Lewis) first. The Inklings first gathered when Tolkien was in his late 30s or early 40s, so the movie might not tell that part of his life. C.S. Lewis was 6 years younger than him.

@Skinwalker - I did a little searching and it would appear Tolkien was actually in his early 30s when he met C.S. Lewis.

Sometimes I think I could write some great stories like lord of the rings. I have a great imagination. But I every time I sit down at the computer to write, I just end up on Pornhub.

My favorite author. I've read the Lord of the Rings 26+ times, The Silmarillion a good 20+ times. Every time I re-read them, I gain new perspective.

I may or may not see this film in the theater, though.

Tolkien lived through hell in the trenches in World War One. I do believe he lived through the Battle of the Somme, a particularly bloody and horrific battle. And he wrote his son Christopher who was serving in the RAF in South Africa in WWII with tales from his imagination.

He invented NINE new languages for his books, and opened an entire universe to millions of young and old minds, made it rich and colorful and filled with hope, and dread. Just a magical, wonderful man who enriched the life of humans on this planet beyond description.
