BLACK PANTHER Actress Lidya Jewett To Lead David Gordon Green's EXORCIST Sequel Trilogy

Though production has been underway for a while, we've just learned that Nightbooks actress Lidya Jewett, who had a small role in Black Panther, has joined the cast of the upcoming Exorcist sequel.

David Gordon Green's Halloween sequel trilogy recently concluded with the divisive Halloween Ends, and the filmmaker has now turned his attention to reviving another classic horror franchise with the first of three new Exorcist movies.

Filming was already underway, but took a brief hiatus in December. Now, cameras are rolling again, and a new lead cast member has joined the production.

Deadline reports that Lidya Jewett (Nightbooks, Black Panther) will star alongside the previously-cast Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, and Ellen Burstyn, who will reprise the role of Chris MacNeil from William Friedkin's original.

No details on Jewett's character were released, but we'd say there's a good chance she'll play the latest target of Pazuzu's (or whichever demon is involved this time) possession.

There was a lot of support for Green taking the helm of a new Exorcist trilogy when the well-received Halloween 2018 was released, but after Kills and Ends... not so much! Now, fans are more than a little worried about what the director has planned.

Widely considered one of the scariest movies ever made, The Exorcist focused on a possessed young girl (Linda Blair) and her mother's (Burstyn) attempts to free her from the grip of the demon with the help of two priests (Jason Miller and Max Von Sydow).

Of course, the movie already has two sequels. The first, John Boorman's surreal The Heretic, was critically panned and actually had very little to do with the events of the first film. However, William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist III (based on his novel Legion) was a lot better, and served as a more direct follow-up to the 1973 classic.

Halloween Kills might not have been on the same level of the 2018 film, but it saw Michael fully unleashed, and is still one of the better Halloween films.

Ends is an absolute shit film, one of the worst films in the franchise, and yeah, after seeing that, I've lost any faith in Green.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I didn’t care for Kills or Ends. I surprisingly liked the 2018 film though. I still don’t have much faith in him though.

@HeavyMetal4Life -

Yup.

Ends made no sense character wise. Laurie's ark plays backwards. She is a homemaker in ends, in the hospital in kills and paranoid doomsdays person in 2018💁

Green pulled a star wars and had no idea how to end it😑

@HeavyMetal4Life - I loved Halloween 2018, it took the franchise back to it's roots and gave us a badass Jamie Lee Curtis. It should have ended there.

@FilmGuy7878 - that's the thing. It was supposed to end but it was a huge hit and they had to continue it😑

@HeavyMetal4Life - H2018 is easily the best Halloween movie after the original and while Kills is a huge step down, it's still far from the worst of the franchise and it was easy to give Green the benefit of the doubt of "the studio probably forced them to turn this into a trilogy, so Kills is just kinda a filler and all their good ideas are saved for Ends".

And then Ends actually came out and was just dog crap.

@AmazingFILMporg - Typical. They couldn't just let something good stand on it's own. It's a lesson Hollywood will probably never ever learn, no matter how hard they try, they will never recapture lightning in a bottle (correction, it's very rare but they have done it, Terminator 2, Shrek 2, Spider-Man 2, Empire Strikes Back).

Not just a Hollywood problem it's just capitalism.

From iphones to cars. If there's money to make them they will keep making the same thing with a different feature no matter how small and brand it as NEW!!!!

@HeavyMetal4Life - I didn't care for Ends at all after first watch... But on second I actually gained more of an appreciation for certain aspects. It's still not good, but I can't say I hate it.
