Underworld Awakening has stormed straight to the top of the US box office, scaring up a decent enough $9.4 million on its first day of release. The latest movie in the franchise is currently expected to finish the weekend with over $23 million which isn't quite enough to beat Underworld: Evolution's $26.9 million back in 2006. Considering it has a budget of $70 million and opened with higher ticket prices due to being in 3D, this isn't perhaps as good as it sounds. Meanwhile, George Lucas' Red Tails followed up in second place with $6 million on Friday. It's expected to bring in $17 million this weekend but still has no release date for international territories.

Here are the top 10 in full courtesy of Deadline:

1. Underworld Awakening (Sony Pictures) NEW [3,078 Theaters]

Dude, the '06 Underworld was subtitled 'Evolution', not 'Revolution.'

I'm thrilled to see Underworld doing well. I hope it continues to do so. I've been a fan of the series since the first one. I do prefer the previous 3 because they were more tightly interwoven (with regards to plot and character) but I must admit I had a ball watching U:A. Personally, I would've liked to have seen a direct sequel to Rise of the Lycans because the end of U:E seemed (at least to me) to have a bit of a finality to it and secondly there is plenty of material for a story there considering what was flashbacked and referenced in the original.

Saw Haywire yesterday - I don't recommend it. Gina Carano is great, but it's a pretty mediocre action thriller otherwise and the fight scenes have all been done before (and better) in the Bourne movies. The Iron Lady is worth a watch for Meryl Streep's fantastic performance, but if you live in the UK, check out Shame (Fassbender deserves an Oscar), War Horse or J. Edgar instead.

@Josh

I disagree I thought haywire was fun. The Iron Lady was terrible, Streep was good, but it was god awful. I will agree with you on Shame, although it was a little too much Fassbender dong for me though, but it's not just playing in the UK it is playing over here in the states as well. That movie is very well made, great idea for a plot, and pleased my wife very much...

I didn't care to see Underworld even though I enjoyed the first two, and I heard Red Tails was terrible pretty much what I predicted. But I caught Haywire yesterday and I thought it was pretty good, I really loved how it was made and Gina Carano wasn't bad in her first acting role, she wasn't great but not bad. Another thing I'll say is the movie isn't for everyone, I think the style might put some ppl off.

ELEVEN, THE PANTIES LOOK BETTER BECAUSE KATE BECKINSALE ALLOWS THEM TO BE.
-BTW=JUST SAW THE MOVIE IN 3D..I LIKED IT. IT DID IN A SENSE STOOD APART FROM THE OTHERS BUT ALL IN ALL IT WAS GOOD, IF THEY MAKE ANOTHER ONE I HOPE THEY GET SPEEDMAN BACK TO REPRISE HIS ROLE, MAYBE CREATE MORE HYBRIDS.WE NEVER REALLY SAW IF HE COULD OR NOT.

Not really into conspiracies, but the 82% critic rating for Haywire is suspect. These dudes shit on movies like this all day, then all of a sudden, they have a soft spot for a been-there-seen-that, by the numbers B action movie with a grunt lead who needed her voice altered and can't act. I'll trust the audience rating on this one: a rotten 52.

Kate was nude a lot in the 1995 film "The Haunted" (I think that was the name of it). Best to look her up on IMDB to see what the name was. But I do know it came out in 1995.

I can see why Red Tails got that rating. It was ok, but could have been so much better.
