The first official clip from Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise has been released (via FearHQ.com), and it gives us a sneak peek at a key scene featuring the unearthing and reawakening of the iconic Book of the Dead, aka the Necronomicon.

As any fans of the classic horror franchise will know, this ancient book is used to summon the demonic entities that posses the living and attempt to lay waste to everyone around them.

However, it's strongly implied that this isn't actually the same book from Sam Raimi's films, and may be the final part of a potentially world-ending puzzle.

In Rise, a single mother is the unfortunate target of one such demon, who awakens after her son finds the Necronomicon and plays the incantations on his turntable.

Let's just say, things get... messy!

I caught a screening of the movie yesterday, and it really is as f*cked up as the early reactions suggested.

Evil Dead Rise hits theaters on April 21.
