Fans have been desperate for a first look at New Line's upcoming horror revival, Evil Dead Rise, and director Lee Cronin obliged late last night with an official still for all you gore-hounds celebrating Halloween out there.

The image features one of the franchise's signature monsters, the Deadites, as it glares through a blood-covered peephole.

Evil Dead Rise is set to hit theaters on April 21, 2023. The horror flick will ditch the usual forest setting and move the sure-to-be gruesome action to the city, as "two estranged sisters’ reunion is cut short when flesh-possessing demons thrust them into a battle for survival."

While initial reports indicated that Rise would be a reboot, it was later confirmed that the movie will actually be a sequel, although Bruce Campbell (Ash) is not expected to be involved.

Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist, Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Jungle) will play the lead roles.

Sam Raimi's microbudget original is still considered one of the best horror movies of all time, with direct sequels Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness as well as recent TV show Ash vs. The Evil Dead upping the comedic elements. The well-received 2013 remake was a far more serious affair, but it's not known which direction Rise will head in.

Please stop. Just make original horror movies. Fear is a universal emotion in all living things and there are a billion triggers and we keep coming back to the same old properties.

@BringFFtoMCU - There’s plenty of ‘original horror’ every single day that comes out. 99.9% of it is hot steaming piles of shit that people celebrate like it’s the next coming of the gods of gore when it’s just crap for the sake of putting crap out.

@BringFFtoMCU - There's a lot of original horror movies and shows. I'd say it feels like the horror genre is the best genre for putting out original content. So in my opinion, as long as that's the case, I'm fine with doing sequels and reboots of older properties. (Although, reboots are generally pretty bad, admittedly.)

That's a neat first look. Didn't even know this was in the making.

Looking forward to it, though I wish we would get a continuation from the terrific Ash vs Evil Dead series.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yeah man, that show was great, the way it ended, I would love to see Ash fighting Deadites in the future.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I was heartbroken when that show got canceled with no real ending. It was hysterical.

@marvel72 - I didnt think that show really had a definitive ending though. It was canceled when they clearly wanted to do more. Maybe I'm remembering wrong?

@CorndogBurglar - it was a real shame. They had already begun mapping out the 4th season too.

@CorndogBurglar - Ash scarificed his life to save everyone then we see he had been saved and him looking as good as new in apocalyptic future.

How do you do a sequel set in an apartment building when the last entry in the canon ended with the apocalypse

Creepy sure. Creepy is easy, but it isn't what I need to know before deciding whether or not I want to pay to see it.

Camp or gtfo.

@Reeds2Much - Evil Dead minus the camp is like sex minus the climax. Kinda like... what's the point?

@TheVandalore - I mean, the Evil Dead remake was pretty damn good.

@CorndogBurglar - I agree, it was a pretty damn good horror flick. But as an Evil Dead installment, it lacked all the staples that made Evil Dead more than generic Demon possession horror. Which was Sam, Bruce and the campy stuff.

@TheVandalore - Oh I don't disagree. In fact this was the reason why I refused to watch it for years after it released. But when I gave it a chance I was glad I did.

Honestly, the evil dead franchise is at its best with Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and Ash vs Evil Dead. The character of Ash and the camp horror is what I like about the franchise. I’m less enthusiastic about the first film or it’s reboot.

Can't wait for the trailer to drop, huge Evil Dead fan. I watched Terrifier a couple of days ago, that is messed up. Heard the sequel is better, so I'll have to watch that and Maverick some point this week.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/1/2022, 11:49 AM
@marvel72 - I find Terrifier to be nothing more than over the top gore for the sake of it. And it shows. They aren't really good movies. They remind me of the Hostel movies. Just empty movies with excessive gore.

Not that I have an issue with gore. But still.

@CorndogBurglar - Torture porn.

Terrible acting but I did like the creepyness of it and the actor who played Art The Clown was top notch, could become a horror icon like Freddy, Jason, Michael and Pinhead.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/1/2022, 6:31 PM
@marvel72 - Oh Art the Clown is definitely really well done. And I think he's already on the way to becoming iconic. I don't know if he'll quite reach the levels of Freddy and Jason only because at of people won't watch the movies because of how brutal it is. But he will get close for sure.

Also, just in case you didn't know, there's an Anthony movie from 2011 called All Hallows Eve that has Art in 2 of the stories. That came out 5 years before the first Terrifier movie.

@CorndogBurglar - Yeah man I watched it on Amazon Prime, thanks though.
