Though a theatrical release may also be planned, the upcoming Evil Dead reboot, now officially titled Evil Dead Rise, is heading straight to HBO Max.

THR reports that the horror flick is scheduled to shoot in New Zealand next month, with Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist, Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic and Hanging Rock, Jungle) on board to play the lead roles.

This latest entry in the beloved franchise will ditch the usual forest setting and move the Deadite action to the city, as "two estranged sisters’ reunion is cut short when flesh-possessing demons thrust them into a battle for survival."

Sam Raimi's micro-budget original is still considered one of the best horror movies of all time, with direct sequels Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness as well as recent TV show Ash vs. The Evil Dead upping the comedic elements. The well-received 2013 remake was a far more serious affair, but it's not known which direction Rise will head in.

Irish director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) will helm the movie.

“The Evil Dead movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at 9 years old,” said the filmmaker. “I am excited and humbled to be resurrecting the most iconic of evil forces for both the fans and a whole new generation.”

Raimi will exec produce along with Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell, who will not be reprising the role of Ash this time.

Why not do a sequel to the remake. It was actually good.

Sucks that Bruce Campbell is retired from the Ash role

Zachary Levi would be a good Ash

I love this franchise. I'm kinda done with the current day Evil Dead stuff tho. I'm ready for more Army of Darkness stuff or a fusion of the two in that future apocalyptic setting. I'm down for original characters, but in subsequent sequels I'd like them to pay mention to Ash and the AVE crew. I'm totally fine with fresh content, but feel free to take full advantage of this universe and its characters. I wouldn't even mind a Team Ash Vs The Multiverse of Darkness movie where all the different characters and versions of Evil Dead characters meet up for some craziness. I like this franchise most when it's deadites are gorey and it's protagonists are chomping cigars and have weapons for fists! I like horror movie Evil Dead, but I LOVE Over the top CAMPY big ideas Evil Dead.

Hole in the Ground was great, so I have faith in this.

Am I the only one that was a bit disappointed with the remake? It started off well and it was certainly gruesome, but I didn't find it creepy or compelling enough. I've only seen it once though so might need to give it another go.

I like The Hole in the Ground, but Jason Lei Howden (Guns Akimbo and Deathgasm) is perfect for directing an Evil Dead movie.

No Ash. Not interested. I really like Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and Ash vs Evil Dead. I’m not a fan of the more horror entries.

Was hoping for some Ash vs. Evil Dead characters to make an appearance to confirm the connection to that world.

Hope they do sneak an Ash cameo in there, I know Bruce is retired an all but a one minute gag cameo won't hurt
