A while back it was revealed that a prequel to the
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was in development, simply titled
Leatherface. The prequel is an origin story for the title character that takes the killer back to his childhood. There was some confusion as many were left to wonder: didn't they already make a
Texas Chainsaw Massacre origin prequel? The answer is yes and no.
In 2006 there was a film titled
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. The difference between
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and the upcoming
Leatherface is that
The Beginning is a prequel to the 2003 reboot of
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, while
Leatherface is a prequel to 1974 original and the 2013 sequel to the original (titled
Texas Chainsaw). Also, the Leatherface killer and his origins seem to be the primary focus of the upcoming film, whereas
The Beginning focused on the killer family as a whole and Leatherface was not the primary focus.
