FRIDAY THE 13TH: Jason Will Return To Theaters For New Reboot From Original Director Sean S. Cunningham

We recently learned that Peacock gave a straight-to-series order to a Friday the 13th prequel titled Crystal Lake with Bryan Fuller and Victor Miller on board as writers and executive producers, but it seems we may also get to see Jason Vorhees swinging his signature machete on the big screen before too long.

According to Bloody Disgusting (via FearHQ.com), original Friday helmer Sean S. Cunningham is developing a reboot alongside writer Jeff Locker and director Jeremy Weiss.

The Friday the 13th rights are a bit of a tangled mess at the moment, but Locker believes they have found a way to sidestep any legal issues that may arise - and if not, they have a "plan B" for a direct sequel to the original (there are already plenty of sequels, of course, so we assume he means a Halloween 2018-style revival).

“Obviously, the prequel TV series has reignited interest about a new film, so we’re hoping the surrounding excitement will inspire both sides to come together and give us Jason on the big screen again for the first time in 14 years, but we also have a Plan B for a sequel to the original we think fans will absolutely love and should avoid any legal entanglements.”

Cunningham and co. are also working on a reboot of 1985 horror comedy House (there's even an early promo poster, which you can check out below) and an original project called The Night Driver.

“The House reboot is both an update and reimagining of the classic series, centering around the birth of a haunted house,” Locker explains. “Lots of great scares and howl-at-the-screen laughs, plus we’re bringing back a few of your favorite monsters from the original for some really fun but equally terrifying kills.”

It sounds like all of these projects are in the very early stages of development, but Friday fans are sure to be excited by the prospect of seeing Jason do his thing on the big screen again after so many years.

Wonder if he can use the hockey mask and the machete considering those things came in after the first film

@dracula - This article breaks down the rights issues pretty well.

Victor Miller, the original screenwriter, owns some of the rights, but not all. He can use a young Jason, but can't use the mask and doesn't actually own the title Friday the 13th.

Friday is definitely an interesting franchise. It didn't find comfortable footing until the third movie.

@Chuck420Taylor - I think it found its footing in the 2nd movie, which in my opinion is one of the best entries for the series, but it wasn't until the 3rd movie where the franchise started to become the iconic series we know today (because that's when he gets the hockey mask).

For me, the top Friday movies are:
1) Part 6- Jason Lives
2) Part 2
3) Part 4- The Final Chapter
4) Part 7- The New Blood (this gives us THE definitive version of Jason)

@HeavyMetal4Life - I have to agree with you. Part 1 is up there. 3 was bad even though that’s where he got the mask.
5 was very bad. 8 was atrocious.

@Chuck420Taylor - The idea of a vengeful zombie slasher is always a fun time.

Just leave these classics alone please.

@CorndogBurglar - This is Hollywood we're talking about here. It's a creative void that exists only to mine and remake existing content until they have driven the originals into the ground and demoralized the fans for profit.
Everything you once loved will be destroyed.

LET'S GOOOOOOOO!!! Hopefully it's more Zombie Jason like what we got in parts 6-10

@KaptainKhaos - actually that's probably something they can't do since zombie Jason is a sequel thing. They only own the rights to the original film, and can't do anything that conflicts with the copyright of the other movies.

@Origame - oh damn, well if that's the case then I'll probably pass, I'm a bigger fan of undead Jason then dude in a hockey mask

Idk about this😳....

He hasn't done anything recent. His style might be dated. You always want fresh hands on old IP...

I'll stick to the A24 show 😎

@AmazingFILMporg - better yet, stick to the Never Hike Alone series!

@HeavyMetal4Life - - First of all, I've never heard Never Hike Alone, so I'll have to check it out.

Second, if you haven't seen this, I recommend it. It's a very well made Jason vs Michael Myers fan film. It's called Jason vs Michael Myers: Evil Emerges.

Good stuff

@HeavyMetal4Life -

What did you think of the scream 6 trailer?
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 1/22/2023, 12:50 PM
Nahhh. I'll stick with the Never Hike Alone series from Womp Stomp films, which is the best Jason stuff we have received since The New Blood.

@HeavyMetal4Life -

Enjoyed 1st one. Glad they are making a sequel

It's too bad they couldn't take advantage of Halloween's spark of the rise in slasher movies sooner because all of that legal stuff prevented them from making a new Friday movie.

Who needs something new and original when it's so much easier to simply regurgitate nostalgia to the undemanding masses... 🙄

Easy money.

I’ll watch it out of curiosity because I’m a big Jason fan but I would still prefer something new
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 1/22/2023, 1:28 PM
This is a franchise that only has 1 films worth of ideas, so I refuse to believe a prequel series could reignite interest in a movie. I don’t even know who would have interest in a prequel series to begin with
