Resident Evil Review: Zach Cregger's Relentlessly Tense Reboot Is The RE Movie Fans Have Been Waiting For

Yes, even without Leon, Claire, Jill, or any other character from the games, Zach Cregger has delivered the best - and most faithful - Resident Evil movie yet...

Capcom's Resident Evil series remains one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, but the property has not fared nearly as well in other media.

The Paul W.S. Anderson/Milla Jovovich movies do have their fans, but are generally viewed as throwaway time-wasters. The last Resident Evil feature was Johannes Roberts' (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night) Welcome to Raccoon City, starring Kaya Scodelario (Crawl) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, and Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield. It was not well-received by fans or critics.

More recently, a live-action Resident Evil series starring the late Lance Reddick (John Wick, The Wire) as Albert Wesker was released on Netflix and was met with an even worse reception.

Zach Cregger's reboot arrives in theaters this weekend, and while some gamers may not be overjoyed with his decision to avoid utilizing any recognizable characters or storylines, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons clearly understood the assignment when it comes to delivering a nail-biting survival horror experience.

From the very start, this movie puts the pedal to the metal and barely lets up for 90 minutes, as our woefully unprepared protagonist is forced to run the gauntlet from Hell. Bryan (Austin Abrams) is a medical courier tasked with delivering what he assumes to be a vital transplant organ to Raccoon City General Hospital. After lying about his vehicle being equipped for the adverse weather conditions, Bryan begins his journey while arguing with his pregnant girlfriend over the phone. Distracted, he hits a woman who runs onto the road, and the nightmare begins.

Though there are a few surprises along the way, Cregger keeps things very simple as Bryan moves through various locations, encountering all manner of monsters (as well as a few humans) as he inches closer to his destination. Bryan isn't an idiot, exactly, but he's definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and the fact that he is so out of his depth (he can barely even hold a gun... at first) only heightens the tension.

There are a handful of supporting characters, but this is basically a one-hander, and Abrams is perfectly cast in his first lead role as an awkwardly charming everyman who can hardly believe that the horrific things he witnesses all around him are actually happening. Bryan remains a reluctant participant in the carnage throughout (who could blame him?), but as the story progresses and the importance of his mission becomes clear, you'll find yourself rooting for the hapless hero to overcome the odds and make it to the end in one piece.

What qualifies as "scary" will obviously vary from person to person, and while Resident Evil does feature a few creepy moments, it's having too much fun to ever feel genuinely unsettling. The movie more than makes up for this by ratcheting up the suspense to almost unbearable levels, while pummeling the audience with lashings of gore and some incredibly effective jump scares.

It takes a lot to catch this seasoned horror hound off guard, but Resident Evil got me several times, and the guy sitting in front of me at my screening spent the majority of the movie with his jacket in front of his face.

The movie is also surprisingly funny. Cregger's previous films did include some black humor, but it probably wouldn't be a stretch to describe his latest as a horror comedy. In a recent interview, the director said that he actually cut a lot of the jokes following negative test screening feedback, which was probably a smart move! The comedic elements don't offset the horror to any significant degree, but a couple of gags do feel a bit out of place, especially in the final act.

Ironically enough, it's when Resident Evil does lean closer to the games (I'll need to be as vague as possible here to avoid spoilers) that the movie begins to run out of steam, and the ending is certain to split opinions.

At one point, Bryan shouts "video game!" after (finally) getting a shot on target. This is a callback to an earlier conversation, but it's hard not to wonder if it may also have been Cregger's meta way of warning certain fans to be careful what they wish for.

Resident Evil is a blood-soaked blast for every minute of its lean runtime, and easily one of the best video game adaptations of all time. While it may not directly pull from the source material, by focusing on replicating the relentless, anxiety-inducing intensity of playing the games, Zach Cregger has delivered the most faithful RE movie yet.

From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger directs from a screenplay he wrote with Shay Hatten, and producers include Robert Kulzer, Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash. The executive producers are Oliver Berben, Victor Hadida, Richard Wright, and Robert Bernacci.

Resident Evil is set to be released in theaters on September 18.

"Zach Cregger's Relentlessly Tense Reboot Is The RE Movie Fans Have Been Waiting For"

RE fan here and this is not the movie I have been waiting for. But I'm glad you liked it and I have no doubt people will.

@Irregular - I'd have put "Zach Cregger's Relentlessly Tense Reboot Is The RE Movie Fans who want to recreate the experience of playing the games and don't mind that Leon doesn't show up to save Jill Have Been Waiting For" but didn't have enough space.

@MarkCassidy - if they changed the name of the movie, and possibly the name of the town, would anyone even know this is was an RE adaption?

@MarkCassidy - Nah what it should be is "Zach Cregger's Resident Evil Is Perfect for People Who Think Recognizing a Typewriter and Watching Someone Run Around And Scream for 90 Minutes Counts as Adaptaing a 30-Year Old Franchise" but I get it you didn't have enough space....nor the thick skin to handle my comment. But cheers for you liking the movie I guess...?

@MarkCassidy - Idk it might be the condescending strawman reply. I'm not watching the movie till it hits streaming because like I said, as a fan of the games...it is not the RE movie I want to see.

@MarkCassidy - The script was already online and its quite known that 85% of the script is in the movie. Including the "mixed opinion" ending when Bryan gets infected and turns into a BOW...right? You're opinion will be irrelevant by then, so I'll have to pass on chatting up with you.

But like my OP stated "But I'm glad you liked it and I have no doubt people will.

It's not. Not until they do a proper adaptation of the first game, which we'll never get. Guess we're stuck with everyone's OCs instead.

Good review Mark , excited to check out this movie!!.

It’s so good to see the praise Austin Abrams is getting for this film , I know he’s been acting for awhile now but I noticed him first in Wolfs (a decent watch) which came out in 2024 for Apple TV+ in which he stole the movie from Brad Pitt & George Clooney…

Obviously he was great in Weapons too last year but with this and Whalefall (dudes in survival mode this year lol) , it’s cool to see him being the lead now!!.

I'll take a good movie that actually shows love to the GAME. It'll be a massive success, then maybe you get Resident Evil mansion or something taking place during this movie on the other side of town. People who are fans of the games AND who love movies are excited for this. [frick] everyone else lol

TheWinkler - 9/16/2026, 7:18 PM
@bobevanz - EXACTLY. Not a single one of the live action films have leaned into the desperate survival or horror aspects of the games. Its just been a action horror, zombie killing fests. If Cregger shows that the actual survival horror aspect of RE can work, a tighter adaption of something like RE1 could too.

A claustrophobic, in over their heads adaption of the mansion would be such a great setting, and I was really bummed when the last reboot was announced to be another Racoon city endeavor. Knew as soon as that came up that it would be another action piece, with horror laid over the top of it.

If they would've pursued adapting any of the games, it would've surely failed in the fans eyes, just like the loose Amderson adaptations or the straight forward Racoon City film with all the OG characters from a couple of years back.

This movie seems like the same kind of tonal shift for the films that RE7 was for the games and as a long time fan, I'm here for it.

@TheWinkler - yep. Everyone on here (and everywhere else) complaining it’s not the film they wanted - even if that’s what they got, it undoubtedly would never match what they had in their heads. So they would still bitch about it. They’ll never be satisfied.
