SCREAM VI Directors Say Their Universal Monster Movie Starring Melissa Barrera Is A "Bloodbath" (Exclusive)

Talking about the Digital release of Scream VI, filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett share an update on their Universal Monster Movie, promising fans, "it's fun, it's funny, and it's a bloodbath."

Universal Pictures' plans for a Dark Universe went out of the window when The Mummy bombed, but The Invisible Man (which was a standalone movie) proved that these iconic characters can still be reinvented in new and exciting ways.

We recently learned that Scream VI helmers Radio Silence, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett, are developing an untiled Universal Monster Movie for the studio, with Melissa Barrera reteaming with them as the project's lead. Stephen Shields and Guy Busick penned the screenplay, but there's been no word on which monster we can expect to be put front and centre.

We're certainly excited to see what Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett bring to the table after their two Scream movies and recently got an update from the project while discussing the sixth instalment's recent release on Digital.

"I think the tease is that we’re in Ireland prepping it right now," Gillet laughs in the video below. "It is hopefully gonna get up and shooting in the next few weeks. I mean, look, getting to work with Melissa again is a dream. She’s become a dear, dear friend over the last few years and if we could work with her on everything, we would."

"This is a fun movie. It has a lot of the energy people have come to associate our work with," the filmmaker continues. "It’s funny, it’s fun, and it’s a bloodbath. We’re excited to share more about it."

A bloodbath? Sign us up for that.

We didn't realise the movie was quite this far along, but with cameras set to begin rolling imminently, more details are bound to be revealed soon. While shooting this means Radio Silence has put the pause button on the Scream franchise for the time being, that series is one we're sure they'll return to somewhere down the line given the success of their last two efforts (one more instalment should push the franchise beyond $1 billion worldwide).

Between starring in the past two Scream movies and In the Heights, Barrera's star is on the rise and it should be a blast seeing her take centre stage in this monster flick. Check out our interview with the actress here

Scream VI is now available on Digital platforms and Paramount+ and arrives on 4K Ultra HD SteelBook, on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on July 11.

Please. Stop making Fast and Furious movies, Scream movies, Madea movies, and anything else that's had more than 2 or 3 sequels. Except Avengers and American Pie movies. Those I will take all day.

The concept of a shared monster world can exist if it's done right and taken seriously and not another cash grab to be an Avengers franchise. The Mummy (Reboot) was absolutely trash. The Last Voyage of the Demeter would be a good point to start. And a second film with Dracula being imprisoned in a tomb. If they make the films period pieces first and then integrate them as urban legends or myths within their own world they would work.

scream 6 kinda sucked ass IMO. There was some good, but I feel like they were too scared to kill anyone and it kind of crapped on what a scream movie is.
