Despite the later installments receiving decidedly mixed responses, the Scream franchise will go down as one of the most popular horror film series of all time, and Ghostface and the gang are set to return for the long-awaited fifth movie early next year.
We recently got a look at some footage via the first trailer, and Empire has now shared a new still featuring this latest incarnation of the masked killer stalking his latest victim, Tara (The Babysitter: Killer Queen's Jenna Ortega). Based on the trailer, we're assuming Ortega will appear in the opening scene, which means poor Tara probably won't last very long!
“This movie is a love letter in every way,” says co-director Bettinelli-Olpin of the new Scream. “For both of us, Scream would be on not just our top five movies that we love, but movies that shaped who we are as filmmakers.”
Check out the new image below along with the trailer.
Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (“Sidney Prescott”), Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) and David Arquette (“Dewey Riley”) return to their iconic roles in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.
Paramount Pictures teamed with Spyglass Media to co-produce and distribute Scream, which has Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett on board to direct. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are co-writing the screenplay. Producers for the film are Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak, with Kevin Williamson executive producing.
Scream slices its way into theaters next January.
