BLADE RUNNER And BATMAN BEGINS Actor Rutger Hauer Has Passed Away At The Age Of 75

Dutch actor Rutger Hauer has sadly passed away at the age of 75 after a short, unspecified illness. His agent, Steve Kenis, confirmed the news and said that Hauer’s funeral was held Wednesday.

Hauer appeared in several popular films in The Nederlands before landing the role of the villain in 1981 Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks. Soon after, he portrayed arguably his most memorable character in Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic, Blade Runner.

Hauer delivered - and wrote - one of the most iconic monologues in cinema history ("I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...") as brutal, but passionate replicant Roy Batty, who decides to save his enemy's (Harrison Ford's Deckard) life before dying himself.

Roles in other '80s film such as Ladyhawke, Flesh and Blood and The Hitcher followed, and more recently he appeared in the likes of Sin City and Batman Begins.

Hauer is survived by his second wife of 50 years, Ineke ten Cate, and a daughter, actress Aysha Hauer, from his marriage to Heidi Merz.

Roy Batty could have so easily been a one-dimensional android looking for revenge. Hauer injected that role with so much humanity, pathos and empathy it turned into one of the greatest villains in film history. His final speech from Blade Runner is my favorite monologue in film history, and he steals that movie.
RIP. A true legend.

@tmp3 - His monologue from Blade Runner was the first thing that came to mind as soon as I read the headline. And quite suitable.

@tmp3 - Not only that he went significantly off script for the most iconic line; All these moments will be lost in time like tears in rain.

Wow... he was such a great and memorable character actor that brought gravitas to whatever role he played. His character in Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite movie portrayals of androids, he will be sadly missed.

@BlackBeltJones - BLIND FURY!!! I love this film! Being mostly blind and all. When he's driving the van..."Watch what your doing man,are you blind!?" laughing and looking out the drivers side window..."Yes!"

I just read he lived surprisingly close by where I live, and if I’d known before I would have paid him a visit. Even though he is great in his famous roles, I salute him for his work he did for smaller and low-key directors, actors and others in the industry

I thought Blade Runner was the only film I've ever seen him in. I had no idea that Earle from Batman Begins was him. That's how well he transformed himself. Sad to hear.

Man, I just bought the first issue of the new Blade Runner comic last week. After reading it, it got me in the mood to watch the movie again. I was finally able to get time just last night to watch it, then to get this news today. Freaked me out a little.

Sad news for us all. Rutger was one of the best. He will be missed for sure.
