During the finals of the World Cup (France won, FYI) in the UK this evening, the first teaser trailer for the eleventh season of Doctor Who debuted on BBC. As you can see below, it doesn't appear to actually feature any footage from the series but it does show plenty of time-travel shenanigans, putting the spotlight not only on Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor but also the new supporting cast.

The trailer is accompanied by the tagline "The Universe is Calling" and that could be a sign of the epic new direction the show will be heading in. Either way, The Doctor has a smile on her face and that could point to a much lighter tone after the darker years we've had with Peter Capaldi in the role. Joining Whittaker when the show returns this fall will be Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill.

This season has a lot of obstacles to overcome:

New showrunner and era of the show because its being rebooted like in 2005 and 2010,

Having the pressure of introducing the first female Doctor and selling it to those still not convinced,

A odd choice of lead writer over a more experienced writer like Mark Gatis,

Veterans like Murray Gold leaving the show,

An unusual companion choice in Bradly Walsh.

This is either going to be a disaster or just the reboot the show needed.

@Binker - You only have about 800 episodes of it to catch up on. NBD!

I stopped watching the last couple of seasons (Capaldi and Moffatt... nope) despite REALLY wanting to support our first queer companion, but now I think I may actually start watching Doctor Who again and I'm very excited tbh
