STAR WARS: Colin Trevorrow Reveals That The Emperor Wasn't Part Of His THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Script

In a new interview, original Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker writer and director Colin Trevorrow reveals that it was J.J. Abrams who added The Emperor to the movie and reveals his The Last Jedi change...

There's been speculation for a long time now that Lucasfilm never really had a plan for the new Star Wars trilogy, hence why Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi undid much of what J.J. Abrams set up in The Force Awakens and why the latter filmmaker is bringing much of that back in The Rise of Skywalker!

Well, the man who was once supposed to write and direct the final chapter in the "Skywalker Saga," Colin Trevorrow, has now weighed in on his contributions to the movie and the fact he'll be named in the credits. "I'm grateful to JJ [Abrams] for embracing some of our ideas," he revealed. "It’s exciting that fans will get to see the moments that felt essential to all of us."

"Bringing back the Emperor was an idea JJ brought to the table when he came on board," the filmmaker confirmed. "It’s honestly something I never considered. I commend him for it. This was a tough story to unlock, and he found the key." In other words, it was never the plan for The Emperor to return and this apparent lack of planning is definitely disappointing.

Trevorrow went on to talk about what he asked Johnson to include in The Last Jedi when he was still directing Episode IX. "I just asked Rian if he could include a little moment where Rey and Poe meet for the first time," he adds. "They’re such beloved characters, it felt right for them to have some history in the next movie. I thought the way he did it was perfect."

Trevorrow is now working on the next instalment of the Jurassic World franchise and we'll hopefully one day learn what he had planned for this finale before Abrams took his place and decided to find a place for Emperor Palpatine (something which definitely has fans excited for the movie).

@GratefulBat - Considering Rhian Johnson [frick]ed up a lot of JJ's plans, it will probably be "Release the Abbrams trilogy"

@dracula - how about a post episode 6 reboot? Just scrap it all and try again

@Spiderfan2226 - Then we loose Clone Wars and Rebels. Say what you will about the prequel, but at least they were original and had a clear plot. Rogue One was pretty good. Hopefully they just end the skywalker saga, leave the old characters and current characters alone and just begin a new story, either set far in the past or far in the future where they cant rely on nostalgia to drive the films narrative.

@Spiderfan2226 - I'm all for a post Episode 6 reboot as long as we keep The Mandalorian.

Slightly off-topic: I literally had no idea this existed until a few hours ago, and...... WOW. As if there needed to be any more evidence that this guy getting booted from Episode 9 is for the best.

@MUTO123 - I don't know. Maybe because it's 4am and I've had a few drinks, but that was hilarious.

@MUTO123 - it's just kind of an "eh" for me. I honestly expected a better punchline.

Fun fact: in a reverse version of this short film, I actually did have sex with a mom first and then, later on with her daughter back in my wild single days. It wasn't a revenge thing, it just happened. Mom was a one-night stand, daughter was a actual relationship that lasted for a while. Actually, last girl I dated before my wife.

Well then, enough of that awkward backstory. I'm leaving now.

And regarding the whole Palpatine being back thing and whether or not that was the plan from the beginning, my whole feeling on it is: whatever. I honestly don't care about whether or not something is planned in advance as long as you can make it work. The sequels have been working for me so far, and hopefully Abrams sticks the landing.

@MUTO123 - I care if it feels shoehorned and unearned. If JJ can pull it off, I’ll be impressed. But I’m skeptical for now.

"But I’m skeptical for now."

Surprised it took until now for you to realise that this sequel trilogy is trash and that they are shoehorning in unearned attempts at fan service to try and get you to watch it.

@Scarilian - yes, because skeptical=trash. And theres clearly no debating you guys. The movie is objectively bad and f*** anyone who goes so far as to say its just ok.

He had to throw in the Emperor because the set up big bad Johnson decided to kill of unceremoniously. They needed a villain and J.J. knew, since he created him, that it couldn’t be Kylo

I’m not excited about the addition of palpatine. It seems out of left field, like nothing set up his addition so late in the trilogy. I’m sure they are going to shoehorn him into the plot somehow but it just feels like a desperate attempt to get something going, by once again misusing iconic characters from the original trilogy. It wasn’t earned. And what Colin is saying here just reinforces that perception for me.

I don’t even accept these new Disney Star Wars movies as ‘canon’ anymore.
For me the only Star Wars canon that exists now is what George Lucas personally created: the OT and the prequels.
