THE DARK TOWER TV Series May Completely Reboot The Franchise After The Movie Flopped

The Dark Tower bombed at the box office and was torn apart by critics so what does that mean for the long rumoured small screen spinoff? Hit the jump for a very intriguing update from author Stephen King.

Early on, the signs were all pointing to The Dark Tower being a hit. Thanks to a unique approach which made it a follow-up of sorts to the novels and the involvement of actors like Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, we all expected the movie to launch a new franchise but that's simply not going to happen based on the movie's box office performance. So, what does that mean for the TV series?

Last we heard, Elba had shot some bookend for the show that would have featured a younger actor playing The Gunslinger in a series essentially revealing his origin story. Is it still happening, though?

"The major challenge was to do a film based on a series of books that’s really long, about 3,000 pages," Stephen King said when he was recently asked for his thoughts on the movie. "The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behavior in a fairly graphic way...The TV series they’re developing now…we’ll see what happens with that. It would be like a complete reboot," he added, "so we’ll just have to see."

King could just be referring to the fact that The Dark Tower will feature a whole new cast and a young version of Roland Deschain but some fans will no doubt look at the word "reboot" and hope that it means the series of novels are going to be faithfully adapted in a Game of Thrones style series. As King said, we'll just have to wait and see! What do you think of his remarks? Share your thoughts below.

Thank god. Now can we get the real gunslinger and follow the books in all its crazy genius? The movie was pathetic. Happy I torrented it.

I think scrapping and recasting seems to be the way to go here. Do it in book order, include all the supporting cast (Eddie, Suzannah etc) and use Wizard and Glass as a long form flashback sequence spread between seasons. If they really put effort in here then it could be a glorious series.

@CrazyCipher - He's too short for the role. I mean he played Wolverine so he must be a little over five feet tall, right?
Seriously, that could work. Just don't let him say "bub."

Haven't seen the film yet, so can't comment on that. Loving the books so far though. Can see how it would be more suited as a series rather than film. As long as it's not watered down.

Best way to to the Dark Tower?

AMC, or HBO, or AT&T, or Netflix. Adapt in linear order.

Start with Roland's combat trial with Cort when he's 14, then follow through the entirely of Gunslinger flashbacks through the Wizard and Glass story, progressing into the war against John Farson, the Battle at Jerico Hill and the fall of Gilead. You could get a solid three season arc out of that, 10-13 episodes each and do it all justice. You can also use elements of Wind Through The Keyhole, plus Little Sisters of Eluria later down the line.

Season 4 is a soft reboot, you skip forward - Roland is now a man wandering across the Mohaine Desert and we go from there.
