When a sequel to Ridley Scott's seminal sci-fi classic was first announced, fans of the original were not overly enthusiastic... to say the least.

However, once Denis Villeneuve came on board as director and we began to hear more about it, stances began to soften , and now Blade Runner 2049 has emerged as one of the most highly- anticipated movies of the year.

We should be getting another trailer as the film's October release date draws nearer, but in the meantime you can check out Empire's limited edition subscribers cover for their latest issue below. The regular newsstand version will be available from July 13.

Who were these "fans" who were not excited for a sequel? And how so we prevent them from breeding and producing more of their kind in the future?

@IronGenesis - I honestly don't think anyone had high hopes for the sequel when it was first announced. At least, anyone that recognizes how often Hollywood messes up long-delayed sequels in general.

@RorMachine - that's true. Perhaps I lucked out and heard of the sequel and Villeneuve's involvement almost simultaneously.

@IronGenesis - As soon as I heard he was directing I stopped worrying. Still have a few minor story concerns, though.

@RorMachine - Villeneuve is gonna do Dune afterwards, right? Man, I would have liked him on Justice League Dark… Could have been a great fit.
