DUNE Director Denis Villeneuve Says He Will Be Ready To Shoot PART 2 As Soon As Next Year

Though Dune: Part 2 has not been officially greenlit by Warner Bros., director Denis Villeneuve is confident that he will be given the go-ahead, and says he should be ready to shoot as soon as 2022.

There's (understandably) still a lot of uncertainly surrounding Dune: Part 1's box office performance, but director Denis Villeneuve seems highly optimistic that Warner Bros. will ultimately decide to move ahead with the sequel.

The first reviews for the film dropped over the weekend, and while they were mostly quite positive (it currently sits at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes), there's concern that the cerebral, slow-burn sci-fi tale won't be met with the same reaction from general audiences when it's released next month - especially in the current climate.

However, Villeneuve revealed that if and when the studio does give him the go-ahead, he'll be ready to get to work on Part 2 as soon as next year.

“To go quickly in a movie of that size you still need to make sets, costumes, so we are talking about months,” he explained to /Film. “But if ever there's enthusiasm and the movie is greenlit sooner than later, I will say that I will be ready to shoot in 2022, for sure. I would love to because I am ready to go, and I will say that I would love to bring it to the screen as soon as possible.”

We'll just have to wait and see what kind of reception awaits Dune, but for now, the filmmaker is happy to tease big things for his potential follow-up.

“The tough task [in Part One] was to introduce you guys to this world, to the ideas, to the codes, to the cultures, the different families, the different planets. Once this is done it becomes an insane playground,” he adds. “So it will allow me to go berserk and really create... I should not say this but I will say that for me Dune: Part One is like an appetiser. Dune: Part Two is the main meal where we can add much more. That's what I can say. As much as Dune: Part One was by far my most exciting project ever, Dune: Part Two is already getting me even more excited.”

Dune is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on October 22. Do you guys plan on checking it out on the big screen? Drop us a comment down below.

WB should NEVER have green lit part 1 if part 2 wasn’t already rubber stamped to go.

And even more…

DV should NEVER had agreed to do Part 1 without guarantees that Part 2 was rubber stamped to go.

I’m calling a Under the Table, Gentleman’s Agreement that DUNE Part 2 is a sure thing.

this is the moment for WB to put up or shut up, if they're really a more director friendly studio then they should let Villenueve finish the story regardless of how well or poorly it does. granted, no studio likes to take Ls in the BO department under any circumstances but I think that since this is releasing during uncertain times they should be more lenient with it in terms of approving a sequel.

'Dune' sounds awesome. Why do I still get the feeling there will be no Part 2?

"I'm ready to shoot Part 2, pending the sweeping mainstream box office success of Part 1."

I'm joking, but it wouldn't be funny if there wasn't some truth to it.

I can see Dune Part 2 being made if the first one does well at the box office. Even if it were to underperform, the movie looks like it has awards potential. I can see WB letting Villenueve make the sequel if it racks up a lot of awards. Fury Road didn’t exactly light the box office on fire but it nabbed 6 Oscars and now George Miller is doing his planned prequel.

@MovieMonster - No, they will not. Awards are great though they don't replace profit. And as far a 'Fury Road' goes, that movie earned almost $376 m - hardly what I'd call chump change - on a $150 m budget.

That, combined with the awards, begat a sequel. According to The Numbers, 'Dune' cost $165 m.

Sorry, but if 'Dune' make that kind of money I'd likely agree with you, especially because of the pandemic.

That being said? I don't see it.
