DUNE Is Now Closing In On $80 Million At The International Box Office

Denis Villeneuve's Dune has been playing in several overseas locations for almost two weeks, and the sci-fi adaptation is now closing in on $80 million. Will it perform as well when it hits US theaters?

Dune is not set to open in the US and several other major territories until October 22, but Denis Villeneuve's highly-anticipated sci-fi adaptation began its international rollout over a week ago, and the movie has been performing very well since.

The sci-fi epic added another $26.3M this weekend from 32 markets to bring its offshore total to $76.5M, experiencing an impressive 32% drop since its release. Dune is expected to hold its position for a while, but it will face stiff competition from Venom: Let There Be Carnage and No Time To Die in the coming weeks.

This is obviously a terrific start, but there's still a lot of uncertainly surrounding the movie's domestic bow, especially as it'll be available to stream on HBO Max the same day it hits theaters. Still, at this rate, the chances of Villeneuve getting the chance to make Part II seem pretty strong.

In related BO news, Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has held on to the No. 1 spot for the fourth week in a row, and is now officially the highest domestic grosser of the year. It's global total now sits at $363.4M.

Do you guys plan on seeing Dune on the big screen? Let us know in the comments.

@dracula - I read somewhere that Villeneuve wants to do a trilogy, where first two parts cover Dune and the third one will adapt Dune Messiah.

@Odin - if thats all he wants to do, wonder who they would get if they decide to do more of the novels, Nolan

@Odin - that would make for a good trilogy. Wouldn't mind them also doing Children of Dune, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for a half worm half human after that

@Reeds2Much - right so I got me a 10 foot charger cord at a gas station so I can plug it in at the sink counter and be in the toilet room (big fancy bathroom, so downsizing to a small apartment hurt my feelings but that’s divorce for ya) and then that sucker quit working. My son said it shocked him when he passed by it. Sucks cuz it was awesome

Is the books even worth reading ? I enjoyed the original movie and the sci fi mini series.

@blitzkreg - People that like the book and the genre will say yes, people that don't will say no. Go to the library or a book store and read the first chapter and choose from there.

@blitzkreg - it’s in the vain of The Lord of the Rings. If you can get into the writing style then you are in for a masterpiece of the genre. If not, you’ll have a hard time enjoying it but hopefully will be able to appreciate it in another medium like film.

So if Dune does well overall while still being available day and date on Max what does that mean for TSS? Because all I heard was how Max was the only reason TSS did so poorly.

Just a thought.
