BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: TFA To Break Record Held By SPIDER-MAN 2 Since 2004

After kicking Jurassic World's ass this weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens now looks set to top a box office record which has been held by Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 for more than a decade. Which one? Hit the jump for all of the latest details and numbers...

The Force may have awoken this past weekend, but so too has the box office as Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to break records. According to Deadline, the J.J. Abrams helmed release looks set to earn upwards of $30 million today, and it's really being helped by the fact that kids are now off from school for the Christmas break. Spider-Man 2 has held the record for the highest Monday with $27.7 million since 2004, with only Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($26.8 million) and Jurassic World ($25.3 million) coming close to that. With a weekend haul of $247.97 million, it looks like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to have a lot of longevity, and that's good news for its prospects of beating Avatar's worldwide haul of a record $2 billion. How many times have you seen the movie so far? It's three and counting for me as of right now...

"The Force Awakens records will be destroyed once Batman V Superman is released."

No, no they will not.

I was hoping this film would be one of those rare genre-defying films that would be quite monumental, like what The Dark Knight is to the comicbook movie genre- not yer typical B-movie, in other words. As great an achievement as Force Awakens is ie. the first real good Star Wars film since the 1980s- I was hoping for better, less familiar territory. As far as I'm concerned, it didn't quite break any new ground. At least Avatar was groundbreaking and had some real clever sci-fi concepts.
Naturally, I shall be seeing Force Awakens again...because despite my more lofty expectations, it still satisfied in the longrun.

Doubt it will beat Avatar . This movie will need strong legs to do that but then again it has yet to open in China . Still it will be very hard to do .

@TheLeftovers

BvS isn't going to brake any records. Just shut up, please!

BvS won't beat TFA. it doesn't matter whether it's more well-received, it's simply about the window of opportunity. TFA hits pretty much every demographic regardless of age, race, and gender and has a relatively unobstructed path until BvS comes out at the end of March. Sure Kung Fu Panda and Deadpool will slow it down a bit, but it'll keep hauling through even those two. BvS will be big, it has over a month to take in enormous piles before Civil War drops, but the 3 months Star Wars gets destroys any hope any other movie has. Avatar and Titanic are miles ahead of the rest for that very same reason: December release with months without obstruction. Star Wars might not be able to top them though because they got free reign till May.

Only seen the movie once so far, but I have the intention of seeing it twice more at least to include a proper IMAX 3D screening.

@TheLeftovers high doubtful, but wait until the critics have their says and how well BvS is received before making bold silly statements you may regret later eh? :)

@Lem1 I read comments like yours and I rarely hear suggestions as to what might make it genre-defying or monumental, so can you say what would have made it these things in your eyes?
For me the film makers are damned if they do, damned if they don't. They've kind of made like a greatest hits Star Wars movie to please the fans, and yet people still aren't happy. I feel that more fans would have been disappointed if the movie was shall we say 'less' familiar.

As much as I can't wait to see batman v superman I don't think it will anywhere near these numbers. I'm more of a comic book fan than a Star Wars fan but I think more people wanted to see star wars. Also when batman v superman comes out it won't be on a holiday when a lot of people are home and can go to the movies say on a Monday. Dawn of Justice might be 2016's biggest movie but it won't come close to these Star Wars numbers.

I can't see BvS or Cap 3 beating this. Then again, I also don't see TFA beating Avatar. As was pointed out, that was just a freak of nature.

@theleftovers

Dude your top 3 box office prediction numbers are oddly specific. If I didn't know any better I'd assume that you're from the future lol

But in all seriousness BvS isn't beating Star Wars. You're either overrating the appeal of BvS or underestimating the phenomenon that is Star Wars.
