Yeah, it needs to be reiterated for a new generation of fans that Darth Vader is not a nice guy, cool, but evil.

I agree, but the amazing pilot thing is also a pretty intrinsic aspect of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. He was the only human capable of surviving and finishing (and winning) the pod races on Tatooine (as a ten year old kid no less). His starship piloting abilities are also displayed later on in The Phantom Menace towards the end, when he participates in the final space battle over Naboo. Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith both also feature him doing impressive pilot stuff as well, if I recall correctly, as do many episodes of The Clone Wars.

It makes sense he'd still be an impressive pilot in the time period of Rebels and later A New Hope (it's probably a testament to the fact Vader was distracted by Luke's potential power in the Force when he first encountered him during the Battle of Yavin, noting Luke's strength in the Force).

Speaking of which, Luke was also an impressive pilot.

It can easily be argued both were such amazing pilots likely due to their inherent strength in the Force, and that "guiding" them into surviving piloting situations most others wouldn't.
