We've known for a few days that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story character Saw Gerrera is coming to Star Wars Rebels (a series set years before the events of that movie and A New Hope), but a new featurette has surfaced today which gives us a first look at the younger Rebel and confirms that Forest Whitaker will reprise the role. That's definitely a surprise, but something fans will no doubt greatly appreciate.

After all, it adds a certain level of authenticity having Whitaker return, though the Oscar winner hopefully isn't too expensive or that will limit exactly how much we can expect him to appear here!

For now, he's set to appear in a two-parter titled "Ghosts of Geonosis." Apparently, Star Wars Rebels showrunner Dave Filoni worked alongside Lucasfilm story group chief Kiri Hart and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards to come up with his backstory, while Whitaker was keen to learn more about Saw.

Saw was the WORST part of Rogue One (for me). Hopefully his appearance in Rebels will redeem him a bit.

@MattBellissimo - Oh my god, I thought I was alone.

I was so happy he died.

His voice just irritated me to no end

@NoMeaning45 - His death didn't even hold any weight, because we knew literally nothing about him besides him having taken Jyn in when she was younger.

Someone who's been fighting the Empire forever is just like "nah Jyn, I'm done, you go get those plans now". TERRIBLE writing.

Like, yes, logically, Saw coming with them would have slowed them down with him being 80% robot by the time those events happen. But it isn't played that way. He just says "I'm done running".

WHY?! You finally have the answer to defeat the enemy you've fought so hard against and you just wanna die for reasons?

@MattBellissimo - they probably thought to themselves that we'd feel his death through Jyns reaction....

But did she even react to his death??

What I don't get is that he went through that effort of interrogating bodhi, but what's the point if he was just gonna give up in the end?

It honestly astounds me how they took out "What will you do if they break you?...", but kept in "Save the rebellion! Save the dream..."

Saw should have been excised completely and Bodhi could have been the one to deliver the message from Galen directly, along with some much-needed backstory for why he defected from the Empire. Would've been far better than the utter nonsense that was Whitaker's character.

@MattBellissimo - I kind of agree. Thehy could've built this film around the core trio of Jyn, Cassian, and Bohdi who all come to this mission from different perspectives. More focus on Bodhi could've also explained some of the rationale of why decent people mistakenly joined the Empire. There also could've been some tension to overcome of Cassian being very distrustful and hostile toward him due to his hatred of the Empire. Would've helped to give the story more of an arc of the group coming together, which I felt was missing.

I know a lot of people had a problem with him, but I liked him in the film. He was parallel of Darth Vader. He was a guy who would do anything for his cause and became less of who he was because of it.
