J.J. Abrams Says He Wishes He Was Directing STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

This doesn't come straight from the horse's mouth, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor and close friend of J.J. Abrams, Greg Grunberg, reckons the director is such a big fan of the script for the next installment that he really wishes he'd stayed at the helm. More past the jump...

For many of us, the only real disappointment associated with Star Wars: The Force Awakens was leaving the theater knowing J.J. Abrams wouldn't be returning to direct the follow-up movies. Though the still untitled Episode VIII may be in good hands with Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick), most fans would rather see Abrams stay on to continue the great work he began on the first flick - and from the sounds of things, Abrams himself may be regretting his decision to step away.

Greg Grunberg, who plays X-Wing pilot Snap Wexley in The Force Awakens, tells the Washington Post that upon reading the script for Episode VIII, his lifelong friend reacted in a way he'd never known him to before.

"He read it and said something he never, ever says. He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it.’ “He may have said something one time on ‘Lost,’ with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator], but I never hear him express regret like that.”

Of course he may not actually regret it and was simply putting across how impressed he was with Johnson's script, but even that is a very good sign. Abrams is staying on as executive producer anyway, so fans can rest easy that he'll at least have some input into the movie and hopefully make the transition from The Force Awakens as seamless as possible.

Finally saw it yesterday! I loved it! I really like the new characters and can't wait to see what they do. The only thing I didn't like was how much of a whiny bitch Kylo Ren was. I hope now that he is completely dark side he is much more of a bad ass in the movies to come!

I feel like the force awakens was the connecting movie and now with 8 they can be a little more free to do what they want.

I loved TFA and I thought JJ handled the return of the magic and old trilogy characters very well but I'm glad a "better" director is gonna take the reigns for ep 8. Ep 9 though....jesus, I like Jurassic World as much as the next guy but Trevorrow is not the guy to close out this trilogy, but who knows. My two cents.

My only disappointment with The Force Awakens, was that it got made at all.

But at least it's just a shoddy remake of A New Hope. That makes things a lot better, lol.

I think Mr. Sunday nailed it when he said that the best thing Abrams could do is set this new trilogy in motion, then walk away. Abrams is really good at making tribute films, and that's what TFA needed. Is it a rehash of New Hope? No. But it hit familiar beats with a familiar rhythm that made the 7-year-old in me shed a few real, live man-tears. It just felt so familiar, and that is the greatest service that he could have done to get this franchise moving again. Now it is time to bring in new blood, and let it grow naturally like it needs to. I really believe that this is in good hands with Johnson.

Also, I hope Rian Johnson loved Poe as much as I did so we can see more of that bad ass mo fo. The highlight of the movie for me SPOILER:

The resistance arriving to whoop ass on Maz's planet with Poe's black X-Wing in the lead.

I would like to see Abrams direct the next one ... But maybe new blood will be good to get the haters off of Abrams back once the next film starts filming. Then the haters will be over critical of the new guy.

@Cles exactly! This franchise needs those changes, like a new generation of directors which were fans once, paying their homage now.

Disney would be stupid to not let J.J. take another shot at it seeing as how 7 is a contender for highest grossing film of all time.

I think a Rian Johnson/JJ Collab would be interesting.

JJ brings the visual flare like nobody else.

Besides, there is a precedent with Whedon and the Russos when it comes to directing big, money making movies. J.J. will be back.

Rian Johnson is gonna give us something special. He can pen a script like no other. Looper and Brick were written so well.

Brick is one of my favorite films ever!

J.J. Abrams: For the second one, I want to rehash Empire Strikes Back, but once again with my own twist. This is what I do yo!

Disney: ....we'll get back to you.

GTFO Abbrams. eah probadly a rehash once again. After seeing 1 not so good orginal movie in episode 6, 3 bad prequels, and 1 rehashed pos sequel in roa row, i am done with sw. He put no confidence that these new movies can be a sequel and stand on their own stories.

I'm really looking forward to what Rian Johnson will do with the next movie. I enjoyed Looper, but I [frick]ing love Brick!

Guys, I thought I was done with Star Wars. After the prequels, I kind of just stopped caring. But Episode VII has brought me back, hook, line, and sinker.

I feel like I'm a kid again, in a way not even Marvel films have accomplished.

I liked Brick and Looper a lot, so I have high hopes for the next chapter in the official saga. And I'm hyped for Rogue One.

I'm still not looking forward to the Han solo movie, but that may change depending on the actor cast. Honestly, I'd rather they go with that Han impersonator dude, since I'd rather be sold on the illusion that the actor is actually a young Han and not some guy pretending to be, you know what I mean. Looks DO MATTER here.

Johnson rocks, but I don't think we are going to get anything like "Looper" from him in the next Star Wars. I feel like whatever he does is going to be toned down heavily for a younger audience, just like TFA was toned down. That's why Star Wars gets a pass, it's a kids movie, it's essentially a fairy tale
