Reports are coming in that Max Von Sydow has died at his home in France today at the age of 90.

The legendary Swedish-born actor had a career that spanned over 65 years, and appeared in classic films such as The Seventh Seal, Hannah and her Sisters, and Wild Strawberries. In more recent years he played Lor San Tekka in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the Three-Eyed Raven in Game Of Thrones.

He was perhaps best known for his portrayal of the villainous Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon, as well as Father Lancaster Merrin in The Exorcist. He received Oscar nominations for his lead turn in Bille August’s Pelle The Conqueror, and more recently his supporting role in Stephen Daldry’s Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

“It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow, on March 8, 2020,” a statement from his widow Catherine von Sydow read.

Our thoughts go out to Von Sydow's family and friends. He is survived by his wife and four sons.

Such an extensive career. I feel bad for people who only knew him in Star Wars.

In hindsight, he would have made an incredibly intimidating Magneto in the original ‘00 X-Men

@ager - If Ian McKellen didn't play Magneto, your choice of Max von Sydow or Christopher Lee would've both been perfect choices for the role in their own way.

He went from playing Jesus in the Greatest Story Ever Told, to playing a hit man in 3 Days of the Condor. Great actor.

I remember fan casting Max to be the voice of Smaug in the Hobbit movies back in the day.
Cumberbatch did a great job for that so I couldn't complain.

Oh bummer. Always a class act. One of my favourite Devils ever to be portrayed on the big screen was his version in Needful Things.
