New STAR WARS Movie Will Be Set After THE RISE OF SKYWALKER; Sequel Trilogy Characters May Return

We weren't sure if Lucasfilm was even interested in telling post-The Rise of Skywalker stories, but the new Star Wars movie being developed by Damon Lindelof is reportedly set after the sequel trilogy.

Following some persistent rumors, it was recently confirmed that Lost and Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof is currently developing a new big screen Star Wars project for Lucasfilm with Ms. Marvel's Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to direct, and THR has now weighed in with some very interesting new details.

According to the trade, the still-untitled movie will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, and while it is not expected to serve as a direct continuation of the Skywalker Saga, it may feature characters from the divisive sequel trilogy.

This is a pretty big deal, as it's the first indication we've had that Lucasfilm is even interested in telling stories set in this era. While the sequel trilogy was successful from a financial standpoint, the final instalment was pretty much lambasted by critics, and the studio appeared to shift focus to pre-Return of the Jedi tales shortly after.

As for which characters we could see make their return, Daisy Ridley's Rey seems like a pretty safe bet. Poe Dameron is obviously another possibility, but we'd be surprised if John Boyega had much interest in reprising the role of Finn after his recent comments.

It's also come to light that Lindelof is writing the new script with up-and-coming scribe Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain, The Counterpart), but it sounds like there are quite a few others involved with this project!

Apparently, a secret writers' room was formed shortly after this year’s Star Wars Celebration, and included Patrick Somerville (Leftovers, Station Eleven); Rayna McClendon (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Willow); Andy Greenwald (Briarpatch), and, of course, Dave Filoni!

What do you guys make of this news? Which characters from the sequel trilogy would you like to see make their return to the Galaxy Far, Far Away? Drop us a comment down below.

@RevanOfKrypton - every time I rewatch the office, I hope he’s one of those to make the cut or at least he doesn’t come back from anger management and broken wrist. And he still does every time. I’m close to giving that up altogether man I just don’t know what to DO!

Considering none of the 4 main actors want to return...I doubt it.

@TheHumanSpider2 - So BB-8, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and CP3O all said no?

I can see it work, but that doesn't mean I might like it. Much rather see Finn, Poe and Rey be kept for a Threequel Trilogy.

If it's without one of the major characters, I'd be open to it more. Would kinda put it in the same position as Mando in relation to the OT.

@bkmeijer1 - I rather not see those 3 again if possible.

@Urubrodi - I would be open to more Poe, but that's just because I think Oscar Isaac is worth having around.

The other two, not so much. Unless they make Finn the new Grandmaster of the Jedi and deck him out in a similar outfit to Obi-Wan in the Clone Wars.

@bkmeijer1 - I like Isacc but not sure if it's possible to do much with Poe, character was very bland. Finn had potential, but that went down the toilet following epi 7.

@Urubrodi - could always see a conflict between their ideologies be an interesting conflict.

Finn probably wants to talk things out, whereas Poe is more the shoot it out type of guy. Whoever the new protagonist is, can be stuck between those.

@bkmeijer1 - you might be the first person i’ve seen asking for a “threequel trilogy”. Good lord.

Either way doesn’t matter, those actors have zero interest in returning that shitshow.

@DanFlashesShirt - I'm not necessarily asking for it, but I can definitely see it happen a decade from now. No way Disney is just gonna drop Saga movies

@Urubrodi - Those characters and more had potential but were just wasted.

If they'd had Ackbar do the kamikaze run instead of Holdo, then you could have had Poe and Holdo bouncing off of each other to both become better leaders.

Finn had so much potential, regardless of if they had pulled the trigger on him being force sensitive or not, instead they made him a joke.

Rey... well.. could have done with a personality... all the best characters have some kind of flaw, which drives them to be better, look at someone like Ahsoka, she was not liked when she first arrived but had a great character development arc which made her into a fan favorite.

Give the saga a real ending. Rise of Skywalker was such a wet fart of a movie, they need to rectify it somehow. Maybe a loose retelling of Dark Empire, with Rey instead of Luke. Would love to see the young Emperor clones in play with a badass actor like Damian Lewis.
