New STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Details - Who Is 'General Hux'?

In addition to those awesome new images, EW has dropped a few previously unknown details about several of the characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Plus, it's been revealed that one classic trilogy Jedi in particular finally convinced J.J. Abrams to sign on to direct...

It seems it's Star Wars day! Or at least it is over at EW, who released the lovely batch of new images from The Force Awakens earlier. But in addition to the pics they've also dropped a few new details about what we can expect from some of the more mysterious characters. For example, we definitely have a LOT more to find out about the villainous Kylo Ren (who is described as "Darth Vader obsessed") , as "his true identity has been masked from us in more ways than one." It's revealed that he only took the name Kylo Ren when he joined the "Knights Of Ren", and he might just have some connections to the original films. Speculate away!

They also provide our first official look at Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux. This guy was rumored to be working as a spy for the resistance but the caption that accompanies his pic seems to suggest that he's going to be an outright baddie, as he's described as "a cruel leader of The First Order who craves to show the galaxy his might."

It's also confirmed that the lightsaber given to Leia in the trailer is indeed the one Vader cut from his son's hand in Empire

Speaking of the younger Skywalker, it's well documented that J.J. Abrams took a lot of convincing to agree to helm this movie, and it turns out it was the prospect of continuing Luke's story that finally hooked him. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recalls what she said to the director after seemed adamant that he wasn't interested. “In the context of talking about story and laying out what we were thinking, I said one thing to him,” Kennedy revealed. “‘Who is Luke Skywalker?’” Apparently Abrams' almost immediate response was: “Oh my God, I just got the chills. I’m in.”

From the sounds of things this definitely won't be the same stargazing hero we met all the way back in A New Hope, and though no direct quotes back this up, there are strong suggestions in EW's report that Luke might actually be teetering on the edge of the Dark Side when we are reintroduced to him in The Force Awakens.

There's a lot more at the link below, so be sure to take a look. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be with us in December.

Q: Who is General Hux?

A: Another Star Wars character with a dumb name.

Kylo Ren is 1000% someone's son. My guess is Han and Leia's, which would explain the Vader obsession (it's his grandpa). Plus, a scene detailed in a certain leak would be significantly more dramatic if there were a family connection there.

Hux is basically Moff Tarkin 2.0. I imagine that he doesn't last the film, and a larger threat gradually comes into focus, a la The Emperor. Glad they're taking cues from A New Hope, but this does all seem sort of derivative. Hopefully it will feel fresher in context.

I will be so [frick]ing pissed if Luke essentially becomes Vader for this series. I so don't want any retread of the whole "your father was good but went to the Dark Side" bullshit.

If they stay true to the source material, Luke turns to the Dark Side. I thought you guys where all about being true to the source?

Leostrator what source material? You mean that shitty expanded universe stuff that isn't cannon? Who cares.
LEOSTRATOR
LEOSTRATOR - 8/12/2015, 9:23 AM
So what is cannon and what is not? Do the Marvel books count, do the Dark Horse books count? Do the legend of Darth Vader glove remain cannon? Did the Bounty Hunter war happen? You guys are confusing me, Should I just forget all about everything other than the 6 movies.
I didn't read a lot of Star Wars books, I did borrow a few comics from my cousin. He also like to keep me updated on current events, rather I want it or not. So are we just continuing from episode 6?

@LEOSTRATOR:

I have no idea what happened in anything but the movies. Okay, I have a vague idea of some of the stuff that happened in the recent cartoons, but not much. The vast majority of people who go to see this new film will be like me, and the people making the film know it.

My understanding is that really, only the films count as canon and the people behind the new movies felt free to go where they liked from there without worrying about any other material. They *can* use stuff from the Extended Universe if they want, but it's not assumed that any of that stuff happened otherwise.

He looks completely different in the film to I imagined. I met Domhnall at a film festival in Ireland last year around the time the film was in production and he had very Obi-Wan-esque hair and beard.

Don't know why so many folks want to stick to the EU. There was a gem here and there but 90% of the EU stuff was garbage. Han Solo's evil twin cousin Sal Solo...i mean come on ugh.

I hope there is a decent explanation for Luke's ESB saber being recovered and I really hope they don't have Luke turn.
