Star Wars Creator George Lucas Reveals Why He Didn't Direct The Sequel Trilogy

Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, seven years after Revenge of the Sith was released. Now, Star Wars creator George Lucas has revealed why he retired from filmmaking rather than helming the sequels.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, George Lucas has revealed that he planned to direct three more Star Wars movies before deciding to retire from filmmaking after completing work on Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith in 2005.

The filmmaker discussed his career in a new interview with Norah O'Donnell for CBS Sunday Morning, with much of the conversation focusing on the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

The $1.5 billion museum houses 1,200 pieces of art from Lucas' private collection, including paintings, photography, sculpture, as well as original props, costumes and vehicles from the Star Wars movies. The 300,000-square-foot facility features 35 galleries across a 13-acre campus.

During the interview, Lucas explained that his decision to retire from directing wasn't quite as simple as choosing to leave filmmaking behind. He still had three more Star Wars movies he wanted to make—Episodes 7, 8, and 9—but ultimately decided that his museum was the priority.

"Well, I’m 82, so there is a limit to — when I did this, I decided to retire from making movies, which was a big deal because I had three more 'Star Wars' to make," Lucas confirmed. "But I realised that I was running out of time, and I did want to make this museum, and I’d spent a lot of time developing digital technology for the movie business."

Lucas closed out his directing career with the Star Wars prequel trilogy, beginning with The Phantom Menace in 1999 and followed by Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. As with the original trilogy, he also wrote and executive produced the three movies.

Seven years after Revenge of the Sith was released, Lucasfilm sold Lucasfilm to Disney for approximately $4 billion in 2012, with the filmmaker having no direct involvement in the subsequent sequel trilogy. He did provide the studio with outlines for where the story should go next, but the decision was ultimately made to disregard those.

The Star Wars franchise has continued to expand since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, and without Lucas' involvement. The Galaxy Far, Far Away has become a major part of Disney+ thanks to shows including The Mandalorian, Andor and The Acolyte, alongside several other projects.

Following the divisive sequel trilogy's conclusion in 2019, Star Wars returned to theaters this year with The Mandalorian and Grogu. Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, is set to continue the franchise's big-screen return next summer.

@IAmAHoot - A massive undertaking... ten years before he sold it...

@Thebronxknight - At the very least, he could have picked the directors, and they would have used his scripts, and we would have gotten something leagues better than the franchise-killing trash that was the sequel trilogy.

@Bucky74 - That only shows how big was the disregard the Disney execs had for his work and for any essence Star Wars could have, for that matter. They never really cared, it's always been just another product for them.

@Fogs - Absolutely. And George gave them a treatment for his sequel trilogy and they basically tossed it which is insane when you think about it. The man who’s created the thing had his ideas completely ignored

@IAmAHoot - Hm. Let's see... Twice Upon a Time, Temple of Doom, Mishima, Labyrinth, Howard the Duck, Willow, Tucker, The Land Before Time, The Last Crusade, and Radioland Murders...

So I guess it was about ten movies and eleven years before production began on Phantom Menace...

And post-prequels... we got Crystal Skull... the animated Clone Wars movie... and Red Tails... in ten years... Then he sold it.

Say what you will about the prequel movies but the man that created Star Wars should know his stuff and we probably would have been better off if he helmed the sequel trilogy.

If he had made them, they probably wouldn’t have been so horrible.

But it’s hard to turn down billions of dollars.

@Astroman - Donating to charity is awesome. We need more billionaires like him.

"The Foundation was the vehicle Lucas used to make a $175 million donation to his alma mater USC in 2006. He has also given to many other causes over the years including the Film Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer and the Make-A-Wish Foundation".

Thanks for the heads up, @InfinitePunches. It was nice to read about it.
InfinitePunches
InfinitePunches - 9/24/2026, 10:35 AM
@Astroman - You could argue that the money would be better spent on things like hunger or disaster relief, but Lucas has always been a strong believer in the Jungian concept of the Collective Unconscious and that storytellers are the most powerful people in society. Carl Jung believed that the stories we tell shape our behavior and beliefs. Lucas has said that "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" (written by one of Jung's apprentices) is the book that primarily inspired Star Wars.

I think in Lucas' mind, selling Star Wars to a soulless corporation and then donating that money to the storytellers who wouldn't otherwise get the support of the modern filmmaking industrial complex that values revenue over mythology, is sort of his form of protest against the system. Sort of saying "The world doesn't need Star Wars anymore. You can have it. And I'm going to use the money to prop up the next renegade filmmaker who wants to tell a new version of the Hero's Journey Monomyth for this generation."

Yeah, after all, there were never any songs made about George Lucas "raping their childhoods" with the prequels...

@InfinitePunches - What I'm saying and what you're showing are not mutually exclusive. The Star Wars merch bonanza was running rampant... and there were plenty of Star Wars fans who hated the prequels, as Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best can attest.
InfinitePunches
InfinitePunches - 9/24/2026, 10:14 AM
@asherman93 - No. They've talked about professional movie critics hurting them with their harsh reviews. Not fan harassment. Common misconception.

Yes, a lot of 30+ manchildren from the early 2000s publicly decried the prequels online, but it was still the largest merchandise brand in the world through that decade, whereas now kids could care less about Star Wars toys. (And yes, you can partially blame that on the iPad baby generation not wanting as many toys, but Legos and Barbies and Hot Wheels still sell, whereas Star Wars toys don't.) Which I would say is in large part because Star Wars isn't being marketed to kids anymore. It's being marketed to Disney shareholders and 30-55 men who also don't care anymore.

Man, he really thought they'd use those scripts he gave them rather than throwing them in the garbage.

Maybe someday Disney will publish those to make a quick buck.
asherman93
asherman93 - 9/23/2026, 5:01 PM
@InfinitePunches - At the time, discarding those scripts was widely seen as something Star Wars fans WANTED to happen.

@InfinitePunches - I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just pointing out that, at the time of the acquisition, Star Wars fans were more likely to want Lucas's head on a pike than for him to continue shepherding the franchise.

I imagine its hard if you dont have someone directly in the family to pass the IP to. Maybe thats why he sold it. Lets be honest, he sold it before Disney went into their hyper progressive era. They were steam rolling with the MCU. He probably thought this is the best hands for it and he clearly trusted KK to a fault but she likely didn't reveal who she actually was until it was too late.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 9/23/2026, 6:09 PM
@CreateNowSlpL8r - 100%. I don't think he had any idea how badly they would torch his former Star Wars IP -- inherently a male-oriented, space spaghetti western with elements of Flash Gordon and WWII Pacific theater of operations mashed in. But Lucas in a way helped place his former Star Wars IP into the DEI/neo-feminist "creative" process that reimagined -- and vandalized -- practically every big name pop fictional IP from 2017 to 2024: Lucas is a prominent individual donor to the Democratic Party and progressive candidates, having contributed millions of dollars over decades to committees such as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and presidential campaigns like those of Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

The issue isn't that he didn't direct them, it's that Kathleen Kennedy threw out his story treatments. She shouldn't have been invited to the Museum's opening.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - If Lucas wanted the films made according to his treatments, he should have made them. HE is the one that sold out to Disney, and HE is the one that put Kennedy in charge. Either he knows what he's doing or he doesn't. You can't have it both ways.
