STAR WARS: Mark Hamill Explains Why He Doesn't Think A Young Luke Skywalker Series Will Happen On Disney+

After Luke Skywalker's memorable appearances in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, the hope among fans is that Mark Hamill will reprise the role in a spin-off. The actor, however, isn't so sure...

It's no secret that Mark Hamill was unhappy with the direction Rian Johnson took Luke Skywalker in back in 2017's The Last Jedi. However, the actor has since managed to find a measure of redemption on Disney+ thanks to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.

Reprising his role as the younger Luke in The Mandalorian's season 2 finale, we got to see just how powerful the Jedi had become since defeating Darth Vader and The Emperor. Later, The Book of Boba Fett had him meet Ahsoka Tano and briefly train Grogu before The Child chose to return to Din Djarin.

Groundbreaking new de-ageing technology and an A.I.-created voice helped create the younger Luke, though Hamill was on set to perform all his scenes alongside body double Graham Hamilton.

Talking to Esquire (via SFFGazette.com), Hamill began by reflecting on the apparent end of his Star Wars journey.

"When I read The Last Jedi's script, I said, 'OK, well, that's it for me,'" he admits. "And you start that process of disengaging from something that's been a part of your life."

Adding that he was "very impressed" with The Mandalorian, Hamill confessed that the process of playing Luke alongside Hamilton was an odd one. "It is unusual to see yourself like that," he said, rightly pointing out "It can't be cheap." Does this close the door on a spin-off series starring Hamill's younger self then?

"People say, 'Oh, now you're going to be able to do a whole series of Luke post-Return of the Jedi.' I said, 'I don't think so.' First of all, they don't need to tell those stories, but if they do, they could get an age-appropriate actor."

It sounds like Hamill is happy to pass the baton to a younger actor to play Luke, and his interest in filling in the gaps between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens now appears minimal. That's understandable, but surely we'll see the hero return in Dave Filoni's crossover movie which is expected to adapt elements of Heir to the Empire

We're keeping everything crossed...

Literally the only thing we've wanted to see since Revenge of The Sith, yet they simply refused to give it to us.

The Adventures of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker in his prime post Return of the Jedi has literally been the biggest dream of every Star Wars fan since Return of the Jedi. All of us dreaming about what a fully powered Luke gets up to with Han and Leia is literally the coolest time period to imagine... how they don't realize letting us actually have adventures in that era with Luke, Han and Leia is all we could ever ask for is beyond me.

The entire original trilogy they were under the thumb if the Empire, on the run and out matched. We wanted to see Luke achieve level 100 Jedi Master lol or whatever. We wanted to see Han and Leias family, we wanted to see all of that.

I still do.

I think my imagination for what happens beyond the films has always been fonder than the films themselves. Getting a small series with Luke in his prime which we never really got to see in the OT is just candy and cakes.

Let me put it this way, if A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were Dragon Ball, as a fan I would totally love a Luke Skywalker show that was essentially Dragon Ball Z.

Dragon Ball was Gokus younger years, Dragon Ball Z shows him fully in charge of his powers and growing and getting more bad ass with each new threat.

The original trilogy was Luke Skywalkers younger years, I want the show where he's fully in charge of his powers and growing and becoming more bad ass with each new threat.

@TheVandalore - I feel the same way. Watched the OT in the 80s and my teen years were filled of imagination with those beloved characters (never cared a lot for the expanded universe tbh).

But sometimes that's for the best. Cause then someone else comes with an underwhelming work that becomes canon (I'm looking at you, sequel trilogy) there's not much we can do.

@TheVandalore - I remember when the Heir To The Empire books came out. That became my episodes 7-9. At this point, I’d be happy with sone kind of cgi/photo realistic movie post ToJ with Luke, Han, Lea, etc.

Unless they recast I can’t see it ever grabbing people. No matter how good they de-age or deepfake your brain KNOWS something is wrong

I brought up this very topic of making a TV show, albeit animated, to LucasFilm employees, also albeit the very rare times I’d see them, when I worked for The Company at DCA, the sparse 4.5 years I was there until I left recently.

They all just told me it was a cool idea & to look to the horizon for possible stories.🥲 But through conversations (granted they’d never tell a theme park employee’s what they’re cookin) it always just seemed that I was excited for a expanded series & that they never shared that same excitement. But who know’s going forward, it would really be cool to see!

@Cpc777 - Also, LucasFilm & ILM employee’s are really really cool. But, 95% of the time they couldn’t disclose what projects they were currently working on, if it hadn’t been released yet. I did have one person though tell me look forward to Skeleton Crew & Ashoka for surprises, but this was many months ago.

Controversial take: Cast Bill Skarsgard as Luke. He's the right age, has incredible range, isn't an exact look-alike, but comes close enough. Pair him with Alden and Billie, get Lawrence Kasdan back as EP, and let's make some mooooovie maaaaagic.

Not surprising and not necessary. It'd be more surprising if he starred in Rian Johnson's next movie, haha.

Luke Skywalker in the Mandolorian is literally the only thing that has kept me as a Star Wars fan. The sequels have killed any enthusiasm except seeing Luke in his prime. Still sad to think where this is all leading to.

What's the point? So we can have an entire show on Luke Skywalker getting aged to the point where he tries to murder his nephew while he sleeps?

Nah I'm good.

Maybe it's just me, but I am ready to move on from anything Skywalker related.

It took 3 seasons of Picard to finally give us fans the reunion we wanted while Disney has had Star Wars since 2012 and still hasn’t given fans the reunion we’ve wanted. 🤷‍♂️👎💔

Heavy pass on this.

More Disney crapping all over these beloved characters from the original trilogy is exactly what nobody wants.

Yeah, they'd need to recast. The deepfake tech won't hold up for a whole show. I do think Luke should be part of Heir to the Empire.
