@AlextheKaiser.

The Kryptonian mythology of this movie is neo-medieval inspired. Zod, Superman and Jor-el all wear similar suits, the difference is Jorel and Zod wear the heavy duty armor because they were in a civil war on Krypton.

Superman apparently wasn't and got what was ever left in the Fortress of Solitude, which happens to be a crashed Kryptonian ship in this film.

The skinned tight suit is said to be something all the Kryptonians wear; it's like a form of light armor (which is why it has a chain-mail like texture) and casual wear combined (most likely because Krypton was a war torn planet at the time of it's destruction).

At least that's why my speculation based on what I've read of the Kryptonian mythology for this film and what the costume designer was quoted saying in an interview.

@shadow
my theory for supermans unique suit is that it was made just for him. jor-el obviously knew what was going to happen on krypton so he made the ship/fortress of solitude along with all its AI/and the suit. so knowing kal-el was going to earth he designed a suit that would suit(no pun intended) a kryptonians abilities on earth with the yellow sun. i lean towards that theory because of the cape. why would kryptonians need a cape? they dont have super abilities because of their red sun. so supermans suit cant be some sort of military/army suit because the cape would be useless. house of el symbol only confirms its design by Jor-el

I refuse to get too excited for this movie. I made that mistake with Green Lantern & TDKR.

@ahhmynuts, Jor-el's outfit is seen wearing a cape in production photos and on display. It's rumor that has a torn up, worn cape that has to be cgied along with the suit. Jollem's picture clear shows a Knight wearing a cape, it give a regal effect I suppose. Also, have ever seen the film Kingdom Of Heaven? There were Knights in that film who wore cloaks or capes too.

@AlextheKaiser, I think of it as more of a hand-me down or even an artifact, maybe something Jor-el wore when he was younger and less...fat LOL.
CavEl
CavEl - 4/2/2013, 1:25 AM
The suit is native to all Kryptonians, Jor-El didn't make one for Kal because he wanted to Mal to be a superhero on Earth. The shot is a way for Kal to remember who he is.

Rumor is, Clark put it on only as a way to honor his heritage and this is how Zod knows he's a member of the house of El.

yeah but those are medieval times. do people wear capes now? or would we in the future in battle? doubt that ever even in comicbook world. just sayin i think jor-el made a custom suit for kal-el to wear on earth.

Krypton is an alien world with its own culture and way of life. In this franchise it's neo-medieval styled society, so it has medieval like sensibilities. It's not really an advance version of Earth, they developed differently than we did so different rules, different fashion.

Last time I checked that culture consistently changes with every era or interpretation of Superman's mythology. Donnor's Superman didn't exactly match the silver or bronze age comics at the time and John Byrne was getting his reboot going in the early 80's. All in all Krypton may have many aspect of the previous interpretations, but there really isn't a definitive take. So, like Donnor did with Superman the movie, Snyder and crew are developing their own version of the planet Krypton and its culture.

true but would they(military/combat suits) all have the house of el symbol on it? would they have red/blue/yellow colors? some might look a lot like supe's im just saying the one he is wearing is specifically made for him and his unique situation.

@ ahhmynuts - They wear capes on Krypton, we wear suits on Earth. No big deal...

CavEl
CavEl - 4/2/2013, 3:07 AM
@ ahhmynuts - Only Kal's suit has the House of El's crest on it. Zod's suit has the crest of Zod and Faora's suit has the crest of Ul (Faora's family).

This is the crest of Zod...

and this is the crest of Ul...

and this is the crest of El...
