Zack Snyder Hints That Supes Will Have To Deal With His Lethal Decision From MAN OF STEEL

Some more from yesterday's Q&A here. Director Zack Snyder suggests that even though we didn't really get to see the repercussions of Kal El's controversial choice at the end of Man Of Steel, we might well in the sequel.

I'm going to assume nobody is reading this that has yet to watch Man Of Steel, but just in case, SPOILER WARNING. So at the end of that movie Superman is forced to snap General Zod's neck in order to stop his rampage. The decision was met with a lot of backlash from the fan contingent that is of the opinion that Supes would never take a life. At the special Man Of Steel fan event that was held last night Zack Snyder addressed this. "It's a real world problem. I think the effect on Superman, it is a deeply difficult decision for him to make," the director explained to host Kevin Smith. "It's not a thing that he takes lightly, and you can see it affects him pretty profoundly. And maybe we'll see the repercussions of that in the next film. How that's affected him, making that decision… Maybe." I think we can take that as definitely! Snyder is just being cagey about revealing too much. He goes on to address the "unwritten rule" about Supes killing, and rightly points out that he has done so..a few times! "Well, what's funny about that rule is that it exists in the movies," he said. "But it doesn't really exist in the comic books. He's killed Zod a couple times in the comic books. Killing General Zod is a practical solution to the problem. He wouldn't let his personal aversion to killing cost the lives of an entire planet or those little kids, that little family. So if he had said, 'I'm just morally opposed to killing so I guess I have to let him kill those people.' Those are the dilemmas. We set that up directly so there would be no solution other than that solution." More at the link below.

I'm not mad at Supes killing, I'm mad about how it was done. The execution was poor IMO. I still loved the movie.

I was thinking about all the destruction in the movie and how so many people were complaining... then I happened to walk in my friends room as he was watching Justice League Unlimited and lemme say, there were oh so many buildings being crashed into and Superman making craters in the street just from landing on his feet.

Food for thought.

@ PASTO

They are only conditioned to Marvel either letting their baddies live or letting Pepper Potts kill off the bad guy!

I mean like honestly the complaints about Man if Steel are still ridiculous to this very day...

I can understand if some people felt a bit off from the characterization or some plot scenes like Lois just mysteriously coming in the building right after Supes did what he did...lol

But to complain about there being...

"Too much destruction" just passes over my head each time I hear someone give a reason about why they didn't like it. lol

Can't wait to see the relationship Clark/Superman will have with Bruce/Batman. It's going to be very thrilling once they discover exactly who each other is and seeing how they overcome such a rocky relationship will be tremendous to see when they finally start kicking all kinds of a** together.

Still having a hard time deciding which 2015 movie I'll go with as being my most anticipated but honestly I truly believe BvS will be the film for me!

Let's get it Snyder!!!!!!!

@ drykillogic

Yeah because that makes a great movie, let us have a quick ending by flying straight up with Sod.

So Zod could just fly back down to counter it or just tilt his head down and fry them

I think Zack said it perfectly. What, so because Superman doesn't kill he should have let those people die? Ha! Get over it people, if he didn't kill Zod WTF was he going to do, lock him in jail?!
JoeMomma29
JoeMomma29 - 11/10/2013, 10:57 AM
Sod was more powerful than Supes in the sense he was trained for battle. He was the one controlling the situation not Supes.

Not sue what the problem is, would have been worse had Batman plunged the Joker to his death at the end of the Dark Knight.

before MOS came out, everyone was bitching about Superman Returns and wanted so bad to see supes throw a punch, and to see epic action sequences that showcased his larger than life powers and utilized all the great sfx available today.

MOS delivered all of that, and lo and behold, people miraculously still find a way to bitch. even if it means completely flip flopping to the other side of the fence that they had complained about last movie.

smh

The way he killed Zod.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 11/10/2013, 11:05 AM
IMO it's not the amount of destruction, it's the fact that there's no stakes to it all. We know Kal-el and Zod are going to be thrown into countless buildings where the only damage done is to the poor defenseless humans caught in the crossfire and the buildings themselves. Our favorite super-beings don't get a scratch.

Are we supposed to care about the fates of the random, anonymous humans? Of course not. Even the movie knows this, which is why it tried to give a face to the danger and get us emotionally invested in the fates of Perry White and Jenny and that other Daily Planet worker...only we don't really care all that much about them either, thanks to the fact that we barely got to know them at all.

I didn't mind Zod's death at all, but Zack Snyder's explanation makes no sense: that Superman has to learn not to kill and that's why he has his no-kill rule from now on. I'm not a super-powered being, I'm much younger than Kal-el, I have much less responsibility, and I don't exactly need to kill someone in order to realize it's wrong.
Greengo

His cells had been absorbing the Sun's radiation for 33 years and he had a good handle on all his powers except maybe flight.

Zod was still adapting to the new climate.

supermarioworldE - 11/10/2013, 11:06 AM
You can save the controversy over the destruction for the sequel, while still dealing with it to some degree in the first movie.

As it stands though, we go right from the massive death toll to a happy ending, without any transition.

That's lazy.
AsgardianHobo
AsgardianHobo - 11/10/2013, 11:09 AM
Batman will probably give Superman some shit about the killing of Zod, but one thing is for sure... Zod won't be coming back to harm more people like Batman's villains when they inevitably escape from Blackgate/Arkham.
JoeMomma29
JoeMomma29 - 11/10/2013, 11:10 AM
@ SiamAgsa

You are incorrect the final battle he was in full control of his powers, he was just toying with Supers. Hence when he took off his armor and showed Supers he could fly etc........
AsgardianHobo

OMG...the world is coming to an end...I agree with Zack Snyder...well at least the part about Superman has killed before and that it does affect him heavily. The rest of Snyder and his Superman are still lacking IMO.
