Doctor Who returns to our screens in a big way later this year, and a cash injection from its new streaming home outside the UK (Disney+) means the long-running sci-fi series will finally be able to compete with big-budget high-concept dramas like The Mandalorian and Star Trek: Discovery.

This holiday season will also see the release of three specials titled "The Star Beast," "Wild Blue Yonder," and "The Giggle."

Both in those and on some new posters, David Tennant (Jessica Jones) reprises perhaps his most famous role, albeit as the Fourteenth Doctor this time around. He'll also be joined by Catherine Tate's Donna Noble, a companion we never expected to return given the fate that awaits her should they come face-to-face again.

Joining them in those specials are Neil Patrick Harris as a villain thought to be The Toymaker, Yasmin Finney as Rose (which, as you might expect, has generated a lot of speculation among fans), Jacqueline King as Sylvia Noble, Karl Collins as Shaun Temple, Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne Bingham, and the late Bernard Cribbins as Wilfred Mott.

The final of those three specials is expected to feature Ncuti Gatwa's debut as the Fifteenth Doctor, and we get a new look at him and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday on two additional character posters for the series.

With Disney+ getting involved, as much as triple is expected to be spent on the show from season to season, giving the franchise its best chance yet to break into the mainstream.

Everything we've seen from showrunner Russell T Davies' return to Doctor Who suggests the beloved show has been given a fresh lick of paint, and we can't wait to find out where he plans to take both these returning characters and the Doctor and his new companion!

Take a closer look at these newly released Doctor Who posters (via SFFGazette.com) below.

Nice , can’t wait

This is probably the most excited I have been for nuWho for awhile honestly!!.

Especially looking forward to seeing Ncuti’s take on the character and his dynamic with Millie Gibson’s Ruby…

Having Tennant and Catherine back as The Doctor & Donna is just the icing on the cake though!!.

My second favorite modern Doctor & Companion duo after 11 & The Ponds!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Same honestly. I am beyond hyped for the show again and I'm so happy about that. It's also nice that my fiance sees how happy it makes me that the show Is good again that starting with the 60th she's gonna watch it with me. Well she's kind of already started. Power of the doctor was her first episode. Both me and her share that our first episode is probably the worst one you could do at the time. With my first being name of the doctor. Cause I thought it was an introduction episode. Boy was I wrong haha.

But yeah pumped for Ncuti. He's already sold me. And I have only seen this of him.

Why does it feel like the BBC is hedging - Tennant is SERIOUS MemberBerry Wine

@Batmangina - well after the show basically has no trust from previous fans, and had arguably the worst ratings since when it got axed back in the 89.

How else do you regain viewers and the trust of old and new fans alike?

By bringing back the best show runner, and Doctor.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - That makes perfect sense, actually. I [frick]ing loved the reboot and was 50/50 on Tennant and Matt Smith both of them at their best were as good as it gets.

I wanted DESPERATELY for Capaldi to succeed - I [frick]ing LOVE that guy but it just wasn't very good and I think I made it 1.5 seasons with him.

When they did the stupid [frick]ing Retcon Overload/Chick Doctor thing I was instantly out - I'd rather watch the worst episode of every other Doctor on a loop than give that retarded shit a minute of my time.

@Batmangina - you’re pretty much on the same boat as me. I don’t sit and think about how to make certain movies/shows better - but I’ve sat on many occasions thinking about how Russell brings the show back from that shit.

@Batmangina - 1.5 seasons you say? If you haven't seen the Series 9 penultimate episode with him, (Heaven Sent I think?) you've GOT to check it out. It's basically just him in an impossible scenario for an hour, and Capaldi sells it phenomenally. I'd probably rank it as one of the best episodes of Nu Who, period.

Capaldi also got to shine with a great speech here and there. Poor Jodie Whittaker though. I was really rooting for her Doctor, but Chibnall's writing REALLY didn't do her, or the show, any favors. Would have loved to see what another showrunner like RTD could have given her. 😕

@DarkModeDan - In honor of my love of Capaldi I will track that episode down! I will see if I can find it laying on the side of the road on the information superhighway 😁

@Batmangina - You might need the context of the previous episode, cause the Series 9 finale was basically a 3-parter...but I'd say it's worth watching. Now I'll be real, I didn't like the actual Series 9 finale, Hell Bent, but that penultimate episode Heaven Sent? Yeah, I'd argue it's on the list for top 10 best episodes ever, and that's ALL on Capaldi.

seriously this feels like one disapointing 60th anniversary

feels less like celebrating Doctor Who's anniversary and more like Russel T Davis giving himself a pat on the back

@dracula - I’m sure there’ll be surprises

We know that some classic characters and elements are coming back atleast.

Are you sure he’s playing the Doctor? That looks like a purple coat he’s wearing. I can just hear him yelling,
