We may not have been lucky enough to get a new episode of Doctor Who on Christmas Day this year, but BBC has still delivered a fun surprise for fans (via SFFGazette.com) by dropping a thrilling new trailer teasing what to expect from next year's three 60th anniversary specials.

David Tennant will, of course, reprise perhaps his most famous role before passing the mantle to Ncuti Gatwa, and they're both featured in this new sneak peek.

However, the biggest talking point has to be Neil Patrick Harris' enigmatic villain. While we still can't 100% identify him, he speaks with what seems to be a German accent and has clearly set his sights on the Doctor. That looks set to put Catherine Tate's Donna Noble in danger as the title character reunites with his old companion...the problem is, if she remembers him, she dies!

That results in all sorts of craziness, and the long-running series revisiting this plot thread before embarking on a new era of storytelling is definitely exciting. So too are the returns of Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, along with the debut of new Doctor Who character, Shirley Anne Bingham (played by Ruth Madeley).

"We wanted to give fans, friends and families a lovely little Christmas present - with a promise that 2023 will be a riot of Doctor Who goodness!" returning showrunner Russell T Davies said, teasing what looks set to be an exciting new era for the iconic franchise.

2023 really can't get here soon enough, and now the show has been given a cash injection from Disney+ (its new streaming home outside the UK), we're pretty sure Doctor Who is going to make a huge splash next year.

Take a look a the new trailer, and those stills, below.

Looks good from what little was shown. Anxious to see how exactly they explain Tennant's return. Can't wait for the premiere.

I really need to get back into Doctor Who. Capaldi kind went up and down in quality, but I really couldn't get into Jodie Whitaker and stopped watching a few eps in.

Tom Baker will always be MY Doctor!

I'm still kinda confused about the point of this, as it's done. Couldn't they have found another way to do this?

I think a lot of it looks cool and interesting to me though, not so much bland. But that may be just the intensity of story elements and Tennant.

@dagenspear - It's really interesting actually. I was wondering the same thing, but it sounds like there was just a lot going on behind the scenes in pre-production. Apparently, this was the best option to keep the show going in 2023 and make the 60th Anniversary.

Here's a really good video breaking it down:
