DOCTOR WHO Showrunner Russell T Davies Drops Some Big Hints About David Tennant's Tenth Doctor Return

It's no secret that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to Doctor Who as part of the show's 60th-anniversary celebrations, and showrunner Russell T Davies has now teased how that comes to pass.

Anticipation couldn't be any higher for Doctor Who's upcoming 60th-anniversary celebrations, particularly with Russell T Davies - the writer who rebooted the franchise with Christopher Eccleston way back in 2005 - returning as showrunner. Throw in Neil Patrick Harris, the introduction of a new Doctor in Ncuti Gatwa, and some huge returns, and it's shaping up to be an epic year.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble. It appears as if they'll be part of their own standalone adventure involving Harris' villain, a character many are convinced is a reimagining of the Toymaker, a foe first faced by William Hartnell's Doctor.

In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (via SFFGazette.com), Davies commented on the huge number of theories surrounding the Tenth Doctor and Donna's involvement, and shared a few hints about what could lead to their returns.

"How the hell can the Doctor and Donna be reunited! You're sci-fi fans, you know the score, there are all sorts of possibilities ahead," the showrunner started. "Virgin Publishing once had a fine range of novels called The Missing Adventures - is that what this is? A mysteriously forgotten excursion for the TARDIS in between Planet of the Ood and The Sontaran Stratagem?"

"Or maybe it's a multiverse thing, they're all the rage these days. Maybe this is a Doctor and Donna from Universe 557, all set to collide with our own," he continued. "Then again, maybe, just maybe, this return is so impossible that it's actually an intricate illusion created by an old enemy of the Doctor's. Or maybe an old enemy of Donna's."

Donna, who had her memories wiped by the Doctor (to save her life), being the focus of this episode makes sense and if Tennant's Tenth iteration of the time-traveller is some sort of powerful illusion, it would go a long way towards explaining how all this is going to work. With that in mind, The Toymaker is clearly a far more powerful adversary than many of us first expected.

Time will tell (literally in The Doctor's case), but keep checking SFFGazette.com for the latest on Doctor Who as we have it!

Jodie's gonna regenerate into Tennant, couple eps with him, and then he'll regenerate into Ncuti. My theory based on rumours. Tennant's been filming for far too long for it to only be one ep, unless it's a long one, but I doubt that

If the rumours are true, and Jodie regenerates (degenerates?) into David and no other Doctors appear in the 60th, I’ll be deeply disappointed. It would mean the BBC took all the wrong lessons from Chibnall’s horrific show running and decided to do what teenage girls from tumblr want to happen to try and ‘fix’ things.

I’m torn. It’s my favourite Doctor of all time, but saddled with my most hated companion. I’m excited but don’t think I can take the irritation 🫣

@Tasmaniac - oh really? I thought it was always sort of agreed that Donna was the best companion of the RTD era. Different strokes I guess

@Twenty23Three - Amy was my favourite, then probably Rose, but Donna was so [frick]ing annoying I nearly stopped watching. God, I couldn’t stand her.

@Tasmaniac - Series 5 was peak so I’m an Amy man myself. Rose was probably the worst for me

@Twenty23Three - Would have loved to have Amy during the Tennant run. That would be my dream team. Bill was probably second worst for me, though Mickey and Ryan are right up there. Most of the males are whiny, thought I quite liked Graham and Dan’s sarcastic, Everyman humour. Rory was annoying at the start but grew into a champion. I hated River Song (not really a companion, I know). She was supposed to be brilliant, capable and cheeky/charming, but was actually just smug and irritating. Martha was excellent (changed my mind, she is my second favourite) and - controversial opinion, I know - I really liked Clara.

@Twenty23Three - Donna is my favorite of the New Who companions. I'm pretty much alone though with Who fans lol

So excited for this. Tennet was always my favorite New Who Doctor. Though Matt Smith gives him some good competition.

Massive missed opportunity for Multi-Doctor story if true. I love Tennant as much as the next guy but you can't just have him come back in the form of the 14th Doctor.

If the BBC want him back so bad just do a miniseries with him. Do one with Paul McGann as well while you're at it.

Donna only really had two major enemies those being Davros who I think we can all safely say is not creating illusions the other tho is The Master so it could be him / her / whatever that's creating these so called illusions.

I hope this is the tenth doctor and not the 14th or the metacrisis one. Having said that I hope Capaldi makes an appearance in the 60th.

As a life-long Who fan and with Tennant being by far my favorite of the new Doctors and Donna being my favorite of the companions I'm not gonna be watching this crap. Doctor Who writers screwed up canon and the story so freaking badly that it's no longer interesting or good anymore. Been many years now since they actually wrote a half decent story :(

@WarMonkey - You realise Russel T Davies had no involvement during the Jodie Whittaker era right? Like with most major revelations in Who, they're quickly discarded so I seriously doubt RTD will worry himself with the Timeless Child arc. If you liked the Tennant era, I would imagine this will very much be a return to form.

@RafaelTorres - I follow Who news so yes I know that. I also know he so far has refused to say if he will stay with Timeless Child or not as canon and most hints point to him keeping it according to multiple news articles, still no confirmation. I loved RTD and his run as showrunner was glorious.
