DOCTOR WHO Stills Take Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor And Millie Gibson's Ruby Back In Time To The Swinging Sixties

Newly released stills from Doctor Who show Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor and Millie Gibson's Ruby heading back in time to the 1960s, and the costume design definitely has a bigger budget feel than in previous years.

While Doctor Who has a loyal, undeniably passionate fanbase, it doesn't seem unfair to say that BBC's budget for the series has held it back to some extent.

Now, with Disney+ getting involved, as much as triple is expected to be spent on the show from season to season, giving the franchise its best chance yet to break into the mainstream alongside the likes of The Mandalorian and Star Trek: Discovery

Everything we've seen from showrunner Russell T Davies' return from the franchise suggests the beloved show has been given a fresh lick of paint, and some newly revealed photos (via SFFGazette.com) put the spotlight on Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor and Millie Gibson's Ruby in the Swinging Sixties.

They both look phenomenal and while we don't have any additional details beyond what's shown here, chances are these have been shared before set photos start to find their way online. Looking at these costumes, it definitely feels like the show will have a glossy new feel that's more in line with high-concept TV shows.

The latest season finale saw Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor regenerate into a Doctor with a familiar face from the past (David Tennant's), and he's going to be reunited with season 4 companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) for what promises to be a high-stakes battle against Neil Patrick Harris' mysterious villain.

The show's official Twitter account has also shared a new shot of Tennant's return, reminding us of what he first looked like emerging from the TARDIS. Having such a beloved actor reprise this role is a smart way to bring some eyes back to Doctor Who before Davies' planned relaunch gets into full swing.

New episodes of Doctor Who will return to screens this November to coincide with the 60th anniversary. Tennant will play the Fourteenth Doctor for three specials, before Gatwa takes over the role as the Fifteenth Doctor.

You can take a closer look at the series in the Tweets below.

Will his costume be altered based on the time period regularly or will this be a rare thing

Got to wonder how often they will take into account the Doctor’s new look in episodes

Obviously depending on the time period, might not be as easy for him to come in and take control of a situation like he usually does. 60’s would be one of those time periods

@dracula - hopefully they play with the Doctor not being white more than they played with the Doctor being female. Other than a couple of comments here or there the Doctor didn’t have any real issues in the past as a woman

@dracula - Based on set photos from the rest of the season, it actually looks like he's gonna be changing his outfit every single episode, rather than just for the Historic one. With the most consistent theme across all of them being orange (besides this one strangely).

@dracula - That was my only question mark over changing the Doctors race. If he travels to another time period will the times and attitudes be reflected in people response to him - if it is that will become repetitive, if it isn't then could it be disrespectful of the experiences of black men at the time

Its a tightrope to walk.

It's possible he'll just do what he advise Martha to do - just walk like he owns the place

@Radders - Don't think I would worry about this too much as the show will be damned if they do and damned if they don't. If you remember during the Tennant years when the Doctor and Martha travel backed to early 1930's New York while construction of the Empire State building was taking place. Also this episode featured a very young Andrew Garfield pre-Spider-Man. Anyway the homeless camp they came across was run by a Black man. And when I saw this my comment was "Yeah like this would have really happened back then." But I never saw anyone else mention it at all or complain. Cool. Go to the first season of Jody Whitaker's run and they traveled back to the 1950's in the deep American south to come across Rosa Parks if memory serves me right. They did address the racism Blacks encountered at the time and I read some people on this very site that you could tell didn't like it at all. The word "woke" wasn't being used at the time, but that is what they were going for. So like I said, damned if you do it right, and damned if you don't. It's a tightrope that will be very interesting to see play out.

@Twenty23Three - I actually like that it wasn't relevant past a few comments. Shows that the gender/race of the Doctor isn't something he would be worried about during his adventures because he can deal with those antagonists.

Also if it was a plot point every time he went into the past that the Doctor had to deal with racist antagonists it might get old quick and we'd lose a lot of screen time on it. It happened once or twice with Bill/Martha and that was the best balance.

@Nightwing1015 - don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t want it to be constantly happening, but for a show that’s being going for as long as it has I was expecting them to jump at the chance to tell some stories they couldn’t before and we never really got it

@Radders - probably just for the episode since they are in the 60s

Legends of Tomorrow already did this episode lol. So will he be working with UNIT or will they be arresting or harassing him cause a black dude dressed as a purple pimp is trying to tell them what to do in the 60s.

Really looking forward to his Doctor. Having RTD back as showrunner has me excited for this franchise for the first time in years.
