While Doctor Who has a loyal, undeniably passionate fanbase, it doesn't seem unfair to say that BBC's budget for the series has held it back to some extent.
Now, with Disney+ getting involved, as much as triple is expected to be spent on the show from season to season, giving the franchise its best chance yet to break into the mainstream alongside the likes of The Mandalorian and Star Trek: Discovery.
Everything we've seen from showrunner Russell T Davies' return from the franchise suggests the beloved show has been given a fresh lick of paint, and some newly revealed photos (via SFFGazette.com) put the spotlight on Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor and Millie Gibson's Ruby in the Swinging Sixties.
They both look phenomenal and while we don't have any additional details beyond what's shown here, chances are these have been shared before set photos start to find their way online. Looking at these costumes, it definitely feels like the show will have a glossy new feel that's more in line with high-concept TV shows.
The latest season finale saw Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor regenerate into a Doctor with a familiar face from the past (David Tennant's), and he's going to be reunited with season 4 companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) for what promises to be a high-stakes battle against Neil Patrick Harris' mysterious villain.
The show's official Twitter account has also shared a new shot of Tennant's return, reminding us of what he first looked like emerging from the TARDIS. Having such a beloved actor reprise this role is a smart way to bring some eyes back to Doctor Who before Davies' planned relaunch gets into full swing.
New episodes of Doctor Who will return to screens this November to coincide with the 60th anniversary. Tennant will play the Fourteenth Doctor for three specials, before Gatwa takes over the role as the Fifteenth Doctor.
