Lanterns May Not Be The Viewership Hit That HBO Has Claimed As Nielsen Data Tells A Different Story

Lanters has been hailed as a streaming hit by HBO Max, but the Nielsen charts tell a slightly different story, leading to questions about what constitutes a true hit in the streaming age.

Shortly after Lanterns' premiere, HBO Max announced that "Pilot" drew 9.3 million viewers worldwide in three days. Hailed as one of HBO's biggest series launches, it wasn't long before we learned that the controversial third episode, "OutKast," had scored 10 million viewers worldwide.

The issue with streaming viewership is that we have very little context. Is 10 million viewers worldwide actually good? To use another Damon Lindelof series, Lost, as a comparison, that drew over 18 million viewers in the U.S. alone for its pilot episode on ABC (this was in 2004, long before the days of streaming).

Nielsen has released three weeks of streaming Top 10 charts, and as it counts all episodes of a series together, we get a better idea of Lanterns' performance in North America.

Neither the premiere nor the first and second episodes combined made it into the August 17— 23 and August 31— September 6 charts, and it wasn't until the third chapter dropped that it did finally show up. During those first two week-long periods, Lanterns was viewed less than Modern Family (455 million minutes watched) and then American Dad! (480 million minutes watched).

By week three, Lanterns made it to #8, with 500 million minutes watched. However, to beat NCIS and The First 48, it needed three full episodes and a few hours of episode 4's viewership on the night of September 6.

Despite being #1 on HBO Max, it seems the reality is that, when compared to other every other series out there, Lanterns was unable to outperform the likes of Bluey and SpongeBob SquarePants.

This doesn't necessarily mean Lanterns is a "flop." Creature Commandos never charted on Nielsen, and Peacemaker Season 2 only managed to reach #10 after the finale aired. Lanterns took three episodes and three weeks to chart, which is a solid result, but this does rather put that cumulative 10 million number in context.

Lanterns being on the acquired chart somewhat muddies the water, but it would still end up in a similar spot on the originals chart. As of now, we don't know whether viewership is going up, down or staying the same; there's also nothing to really compare this to, as Disney+, for example, has never shared specific global viewership numbers for its MCU content, meaning Lanterns could be demolishing those shows or falling short.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Lanterns has 93% from critics and 74% from audiences. The DCU series has an overall rating of 7.8/10 on IMDb and a "Generally Favorable" 72 on Metacritic.

Yeah. No crap.

Same with the nonsense about Supergirl being number one. That may be true but it doesn’t measure actual numbers in the grand scheme of streaming.

@thedrudo - When they turn off most of the audience who is supposed to enjoy this stuff, you know they’ve failed

If your benchmark for an hourlong r-rated adult drama is that it has to beat “Bluey” for it to qualify as a success, you’re probably not the right person to do viewership analysis.

@Rpendo - This article clearly doesn't understand tv ratings. Those shows have endless hours of content that people leave on during the day or leave running while they sleep as comfort food. HBO dramas are not endlessly rewatchable and should be compared to other currently running new shows.

@Rpendo - Was coming through to post the same exact thing…It’s kind of absurd the amount of outright egregious and factually incorrect content a clearly agenda based ~article~ can force out. What’s even worse is the amount of lemmings who parrot those very same inaccuracies throughout their echo chambers of choice.

@FireGunn - “bluey” destroys everything, my guy. It’s the most popular streaming show in the country, by far. It beats literally every show on streaming, which, by your metric, means that every show being broadcast right now is being embarrassed.

@FireGunn - Because Stranger Things is also a juggernaut with five seasons that multiple generations of kids and teenagers have grown up watching, while new generations keep discovering it and growing up with it. It has huge rewatchability because it never really leaves the mainstream, and it’s on Netflix—the streaming service that almost everyone seems to have.

I have Netflix because my mom watches those family/country shows nonstop. She’s rewatched some of them so many times that she basically just puts them on in the background while doing other stuff. I also have Disney+, Prime Video, and HBO Max, but my parents and the kids almost NEVER open those apps. Netflix is basically the emperor of rewatchability.

That’s why shows like Law & Order, Grey’s Anatomy, and Modern Family will probably live on the Nielsen charts forever. Kids’ shows like SpongeBob and Bluey are on another level entirely. Kids will watch them nonstop while doing 50,000 other things at the same time, and they LOVE watching the same episodes over and over and over again. My kid literally watched Shrek 13 times in two days.

Lanterns, Daredevil: Born Again, Peacemaker, Wonder Man... none of those shows are built for that kind of rewatchability, so expecting them to pull the same streaming numbers as those juggernauts doesn’t make much sense. Look at Invincible: it’s a hugely popular mature animated superhero show, but it still doesn’t put up massive Nielsen numbers because it simply isn’t designed to be consumed that way.

Netflix specifically creates shows like Stranger Things to become massive mainstream cultural products that people can discover, binge, rewatch, and leave playing in the background for years. Comparing every prestige or superhero show to that kind of streaming ecosystem ignores how differently people actually consume these shows.

@FireGunn - you’re right…stranger things narrowly edged bluey out in 2026. I was looking at 2025.

That being said, by your metric, every show on every streamer…except Stranger Things, for one year…should be embarrassed.

“You just lied”

Dude, for a while I was just annoyed by you. Now I am legit starting to feel sorry for you.

I’m just gonna pull back from antagonizing and arguing with you at this point. You’re just too goddamned intense and weird…I feel like I’m punching down…it’s like beating up a fifth grader.

Seriously…stop watching the show if you don’t like it. Making yourself upset and miserable on purpose is not healthy.

@Rpendo - Yeah, I can't even start with how wring-headed this entire article is.

Like the mention of Lost's ratings from 22 years ago. Seriously. Why. It's broadcast TV from over 2 decades ago. No one in any decision making capacity is looking at that lol.

I was going to check this out until I found out that they made John’s defining characteristic his skin color, they were butchering Hal, and this was a “grounded” take where fear is based in how dark or light your skin is. Glad I never bothered, but too bad the show went that route

@XenoJazz - Wow. Why can't John Stewart just be a great character who happens to be black like in the JL animated series? It's baffling, and the only thing I can think of is that these writers and the showrunner are riddled with self-loathing and white guilt. The rest of us just wanted an entertaining and reasonably faithful GL cosmic superhero show.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 9/22/2026, 1:49 PM
@FireGunn - Glad I didn't waste my time. It looked slow and boring on top of all that. Oddly, Gunn is going all in on politically charged and controversial content with his DCU, and souring the brand in the process. Whiny Superman with his evil parents who wanted him to take many sex slaves, and a plot with the super-left take on today's headlines, Race-baiting Lanterns, and the go-to "Nazi's" (because the Left believes anyone who disagrees with them is "Nazi"). It's a recipe for failure but they keep trippiling down..

Not seen anyone discussing this show positively. James Gunn has had to address the dislike of the decisions made. It's not a good sign.

Either way, this entire Jame Gunn universe is over after Man of Tomorrow, He's on a contract which ends just before. With Paramount now owning Warner Brothers the most logical option is to scrap everything and focus on The Batman.

@FireGunn - They’re normal people, is my point, dude. If you think the really intense, over the top, borderline-rabid responses shared here are in any way, shape, or form reflective of how the average viewer thinks, feels, and reacts, then you are entirely too online. Get a grip.

The show is a success, which for some reason infuriates people here. If it’s not for you, that’s cool, don’t keep watching it. But you will keep watching it, because you get a little endorphin rush from repeating your same opinions over and over again to strangers on the internets.
