Is Marvel's Zodiac An Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sequel? Clark Gregg Fuels Speculation With Social Post

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg has shared the title treatment for Marvel Television's Zodiac on Instagram, prompting renewed speculation about what exactly the upcoming series is.

At New York Comic Con yesterday, Marvel Television announced Zodiac, a mystery live-action TV series coming to Disney+ in 2028. While several groups have that name in the comics, none feel like a natural fit for a show, and it's not exactly a well-known Marvel IP.

There's been some chatter about the series being an X-Files-inspired spy thriller, but all the press release from Disney+ says is, "'Zodiac,' a new live-action series from Marvel Television, is currently casting and set to go into production in 2027."

The question on everyone's lips today is this: "Is Zodiac a sequel to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Given that Jonathan Hickman's S.H.I.E.L.D.-adjacent Secret Warriors run featured Zodiac, aka the Great Wheel, as an antagonist, it's not hard to see where this notion has come from.

Heck, the logo for the series even features a nod to the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo!

The plot has thickened today after Clark Gregg, the MCU's Agent Coulson, shared the Zodiac title treatment on Instagram. Why would he feel compelled to do that unless he's somehow connected to the series? Could we finally see characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reunite on screen, with Coulson leading a team that includes Quake and other, newly introduced superpowered heroes?

If so, it would be a big swing on Marvel Television's part, especially as the ABC series, while popular, was by no means a mainstream hit. However, just like Daredevil got a second chance, why not give these characters the same platform to shine?

When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC, it was 100% meant to be part of the MCU. Following a rocky start, The Avengers spin-off found its footing in the second half of Season 1, excelling with a storyline closely linked to the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

However, as the years flew by, the series became further removed from what's since been dubbed the "Sacred Timeline." We've since learned that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige didn't want any Marvel Television shows; they were the doing of former Marvel Entertainment Chairman Ike Perlmutter.

After years of clashes, when the opportunity presented itself, Feige talked now-former Disney CEO Bob Iger into allowing Marvel Studios to oversee everything by producing MCU-set TV shows for Disney+.

The canon status of both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter has been hotly debated for years. Many argue that they're clearly part of the MCU, an argument which carries a little more weight now that the "Defenders Saga" appears to have been folded into the Sacred Timeline.

With Zodiac, things might finally become clear, though we wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't touch on Coulson being an LMD now (the post-Avengers: Secret Wars MCU could help streamline a lot of things, after all).

What would be interesting to find, are the agents of shield (from whichever universe they're brought from because i was never convinced it was 616) in a part of battleworld/void. And then when things are made whole again after secret wars, we have coulson and everyone back in one timeline

@Vigor - they were definitely at least in 616 at the start but given its own time travel shenanigans in S5 and then EG’s , you can easily have it as a branch timeline if you want.

Maybe it's secretly an adaptation of Kirby and Steranko's classic Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD.

When the old Marvel Television was created, I believe in 2010, Joss Whedon received a call right before the Avengers released in 2012 by Jeph Loeb. Jeph Loeb, head of old Marvel Television, wanted Joss Whedon to create content for television. Jeph Loeb wanted to revive Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson for a new SHIELD show for ABC network (owned by Disney). The decision was never blessed by Kevin Feige. Joss Whedon went around Kevin Feige to do the show. It was Jeph Loeb who coined the "everything is connected". The only time Kevin Feige talked about "everything is connected" was in 2014 as a joke to attendees at the Black Panther/Chadwick Boseman reveal. Perhaps to Jeph Loeb "everything is connected" but Kevin Feige never felt that way. I think it's only recently that Kevin Feige started embracing the "everything is connected" when it comes to the inclusion of former Spider-Man and X-Men films into the MCU. The initial Daredevil: Born Again television show was intended to be an MCU reset -not an adaptation of the Netflix show. When that original MCU reset wasn't working and included into the MCU, is around the time Kevin Feige began stepping away from Marvel Television. There is a clear wall being created between the films and television and going back to the old status quo. Marvel Studios and Marvel Television are doing their own thing after VisionQuest. The 'everything is connected' lives in a gray area where one can think that way and be right and one where a person can think the films and television content are intentionally being held separate.

@String -

it sucks, but it lines up with what Feige has been saying about avoiding the need for "homework" to be able to watch the big screen stuff.

In an MCU that's crossed over with all the Spider-Man Franchises, all the adjacent MARVEL movies became canon in Deadpool and Wolverine, the Fox-Men are about to be main players in the upcoming Avengers movies, Daredevil and all the Defender are making their ways to the MCU.... Yet somehow the shows that were literally created in the MCU aren't even canon enough to be considered as TVA pruned realities? The thinking is so dishonest and intentionally myopic.

@TheAmericanHero - i know agents of shield was tied up in that whole drama between feige and the old marvel tv head, its why they suddenly stopped having synergy with the mcu after the fall of shield in winter soldier. then all of sudden the show barely mentioned anything mcu related, then we got a half assed infinity war tie in that fell apart because the studio was so [frick]ing secretive with the ending of infinity war they wouldnt even tell tv side so they can finish their tie in narrative, they just got shunted to the future then came back and no mention of endgame, the snap, the return of people , nothing. so left everyone speculating did the future storyline throw them into alternate timeline.

AoS was at its peak with the CAtWS tie-in. The scene where Hydra was revealed was soo cool.

Unfortunately they tanked the whole thing when they started distancing from the established MCU.

Given we really don't know what the "new MCU" will look like, Idk how this would work. And given the general direction of the rebooted MCU, all the actors from the previous series are probably too old.

Oh, yeah...I member Coulson. Back when the MCU actually felt like a real project with continuity.

Maybe they can bring him back again and he and SHE-HULK can shag DAREDEVIL and make him walk home again.

I am hoping so bad that Phil comes back in some capacity in secret wars. The character who truly did all the leg work to bring the Avenger program together, bringing the OGs together, has been done so so dirty IMO, he deserves at the very least, a final onscreen moment with the crew.

@SATW42 - idk about dirty but it would be nice to see him alongside the remaining ones again atleast…

Hell , it’s worth it just for Thor calling him “Son of Coul” again

@TheVisionary25 - I really liked agents of shield, but the way the franchise was treated, yes, he was absolutely done dirty. Kept completely away from the group he helped form and not being on the big screen again, he might as well have been left dead.

@SATW42 - true I guess

He got his own tv show out of it but him being able to interact with the other heroes would have been nice too.

I hope it’s something new and exciting that has nothing to do with AOS.

Interesting….

Given the Wheel design on the “O” of the Zodiac logo , it does make me think we will get a version of that Zodiac in the show as main antagonists somehow but we’ll see (perhaps merge them with the original villainous iteration of Zodiac or others since there are like 6-7 versions of the group in the comics).

The Great Wheel version of Zodiac was introduced in Hickman’s Secret Warriors which AOS took some inspiration from aswell so I have a feeling this is likely what the show will be based on too…

Given it’s said to be a spy thriller and we have the Shield eagle head in the Zodiac logo , perhaps it’s about a resurrected SHIELD using one of their agents to infiltrate Zodiac undercover?.

Anyway , we’ll see but I’m intrigued so far and hope we get more details soon!!.

I don’t see this being an AOS sequel since Winderbaum said that casting would be starting soon…

However if not then I would love to have atleast some of the characters from that show in this like Coulson ,Daisy , Yo-Yo , Mack & May.

Agents of SHIELD S3-5 is still some of the best MCU content. That is really where the show hit its stride. However I'm not sure they can do that type of show anymore in today's landscape. SHIELD managed 22 episodes every single year. Now we are lucky to get 8 episodes every 2-3 years.

I kind of doubt this show has any ties to Agents of SHIELD, especially given Fiege and Perlmutter's fallout.
