The first two episodes of VisionQuest are now streaming on Disney+, and showrunner Terry Matalas, who previously took charge of Star Trek: Picard, is receiving a lot of praise for his work on the series.
MCU fans are already speculating about Matalas' future; VisionQuest is meant to conclude the WandaVision trilogy, making Season 2 unlikely. Despite that, there are still more stories to tell with Vision, the Scarlet Witch, and their children, Billy/Wiccan and Tommy/Speed.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Matalas was asked what's next for him at Marvel Studios. "I can't really talk about too many things. I would love nothing more than to keep playing in the sandbox," he teased. "Vision and Ultron and the Maximoff family are part of my DNA now. They're part of my beating heart."
"There are other characters who are super meaningful to me in the MCU as well, so I would love nothing more than to continue to work with Marvel. It is and continues to be an incredible collaboration with everyone over there."
When it was put to him that an Avengers: The Children's Crusade would be a suitable follow-up to VisionQuest, Matalas replied, "Look, that's up to the Marvel guy. I would love nothing more than to do something like that. I would love that. As long as the rest of the family could come along, and that may include Ultron. Again, there's nothing [in the works], but I would love it."
Written by Allan Heinberg and illustrated by Jim Cheung, The Children’s Crusade followed the Young Avengers' search for the Scarlet Witch, who had become one of the Marvel Universe's biggest threats after the events of Avengers: Disassembled and House of M.
Billy and Tommy's search eventually led them to Latveria, where they discovered Wanda had lost her memories and was engaged to Doctor Doom. The villain played a significant role in her disappearance, and the ensuing conflict drew in Magneto, Quicksilver, the Avengers and the X-Men.
There are rumours about elements from the story being adapted in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, so that may derail Matalas' hopes, but there's still that long-rumoured Scarlet Witch movie to take into consideration.
In our review, we concluded, "Paul Bettany and James Spader are masterful in VisionQuest, a staggering achievement by Marvel Studios and Terry Matalas that understands its characters, does right by them, and delivers one of the best MCU stories ever told."
In VisionQuest, Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponise him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron.
His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision's son, reincarnated. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron's influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.
VisionQuest stars Paul Bettany, James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, with Emily Hampshire and James D'Arcy.
The series premieres on Disney+ on October 14.
