Marvel Studios released two new episodes of VisionQuest on Disney+ last night, exploring Ultron's twisted romance with Jocasta and taking us back to Madripoor (unfortunately, there was no sign of the Power Broker, aka Sharon Carter).
While Vision and E.D.I.T.H. search for the missing Tommy, the latter references the brief time she spent with her "first boss," who she describes as a "junior in high school." That's obviously a reference to Peter Parker, and the MCU's familiar Spider-Man theme can be briefly heard.
Interestingly, this has led to speculation that AIs were unaffected by Doctor Strange's spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as E.D.I.T.H. appears to remember Peter...or that Spidey was a teenager. It's up for debate.
E.D.I.T.H. stands for "Even Dead, I'm The Hero," and she was designed to grant users access to Stark Industries' global satellite network along with an arsenal of missiles and drones.
In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter briefly handed control of E.D.I.T.H. to Quentin Beck, who used the A.I. to launch an attack on London. After Mysterio's death, the hero recovered the glasses and regained control of E.D.I.T.H. However, following the exposure of his identity as Spider-Man and suspicions that he had murdered Beck, the E.D.I.T.H. network was taken offline.
In related news, VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas has shared a closer look at an incredible prop from last night's episode that, honestly, Marvel Studios should consider making and selling for real...
In our full season review, we concluded, "Paul Bettany and James Spader are masterful in VisionQuest, a staggering achievement by Marvel Studios and Terry Matalas that understands its characters, does right by them, and delivers one of the best MCU stories ever told."
In VisionQuest, Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponise him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron.
His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision's son, reincarnated. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron's influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.
VisionQuest stars Paul Bettany, James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, with Emily Hampshire and James D'Arcy.
Four episodes of VisionQuest are now streaming on Disney+.
