Okay guys, real talk. The Disney+ Star Wars experiment is done. When THE MANDALORIAN dropped in 2019, we all thought live-action TV was the future of Star Wars. Din Djarin + Grogu saved the franchise after THE LAST JEDI and THE RISE OF SKYWALKER divided everyone. Disney Plus felt like home for Star Wars content.

For a minute there, it looked unstoppable. Every year, new show. New characters. New corners of the galaxy. Lucasfilm had a roadmap. But then things got messy, and fast.

The Decline Was Real

OBI-WAN KENOBI in 2022 - mixed reviews. Great Ewan McGregor moments, but the show felt safe. AHSOKA in 2023 - mixed again. Amazing for Clone Wars fans, confusing for casual viewers. THE ACOLYTE in 2024 - flopped hard with audiences despite the hype. SKELETON CREW - also flopped, even though it was supposed to be kid-friendly STAR WARS.

Even THE MANDALORIAN season 3 split the fandom. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t hit like seasons 1 and 2. The Grogu story got sidetracked. The Mandalore plot felt rushed. The magic dipped.

THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT landed somewhere in the middle. Not terrible, not THE MANDALORIAN level. And behind the scenes, Lucasfilm was already planning season 2. Actor Johnny Coyne just confirmed it at Fan Expo Philadelphia. His character Lord Janu Coin was supposed to be a running villain across THE MANDALORIAN S4 + THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT S2.

The Reset Button Got Hit

Disney Plus Star Wars Reset

2024 Hollywood strikes + bad streaming numbers = Lucasfilm panic mode. Budgets got scrutinized. Viewership data came in. And the conclusion was simple: streaming Star Wars wasn’t working like we hoped.

Their move: Kill season 4 of THE MANDALORIAN. Turn it into THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU movie instead. Kill THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT S2 completely. Cancel or remake other Disney+ series instead of moving forward with new seasons.

Now the whole galaxy is going back to theaters. THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU tested mixed but audiences still showed up. That’s all Disney needed to hear. If movies bring people to cinemas, then movies are the plan.

Next bet is Ryan Gosling in STARFIGHTER summer 2027. Big name, big budget, big risk. If that works, expect more movie announcements and fewer Disney+ series. If it flops, Lucasfilm might have to rethink everything again.

What This Means For Fans

Disney basically admitted: quantity didn’t beat quality. Too many shows, too much mixed reception, not enough THE MANDALORIAN magic. So they’re doing what worked before THE MANDALORIAN — big movies, big events, every few years instead of every few months.

Is it the right call? Maybe. TV gave us ANDOR which was elite-tier Star Wars. But it also gave us a lot of filler that diluted the brand. Theaters force Lucasfilm to focus. One story, one budget, one shot to get it right.

But I’m gonna miss weekly Star Wars drops. The Monday morning Reddit threads. The theory videos. The whole “what happens next week” energy. Movies don’t give you that same community vibe.

Bottom line
The Disney+ era of Star Wars is officially over. Lucasfilm is remaking and rebooting instead of continuing seasons. If you wanted THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT S2, THE MANDALORIAN S4… it’s not happening. Movies only from here on out.

My rating on the reset: 7/10
Quality over quantity makes sense. But the transition is gonna hurt for TV-first fans.

What do you guys think? Should Star Wars stay in theaters or go back to Disney+? Comment below and tell me what show you’re most mad they cancelled.
