Okay guys, so plot twist nobody saw coming. Turns out THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT was never supposed to be a one-and-done miniseries. According to actor Johnny Coyne who plays Lord Janu Coin, Lucasfilm had him booked for season 4 of THE MANDALORIAN AND a whole episode of THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT season 2. Then… “it all went away.” His words, not mine.
What Actually Happened Behind The Scenes
Coyne showed up as Lord Janu Coin in THE MANDALORIAN season 3 as a hologram talking to Moff Gideon. Small role, blink-and-you-miss-it stuff. Then he got a bigger part in THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU movie because Mando has to hunt him down. But the original plan? Way bigger than what we got.
He told Fan Expo Philadelphia that before the 2024 Hollywood strikes and Lucasfilm’s big reset, Coin was supposed to run through the whole Mando-Verse. Season 4 of THE MANDALORIAN + a THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT episode. The full arc was mapped out. Not just a cameo. Not just movie filler. An actual villain thread connecting the streaming shows.
This is huge because everyone assumed THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT was always a limited series. One season, tie into THE MANDALORIAN, done. But Coyne’s comments blow that up. Lucasfilm had plans. They had scripts. They had actors under contract. Then they burned it all down.
So Why’d It Get Cancelled?
This is where Disney and Lucasfilm shifted gears hard. After SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY flopped and shows like THE ACOLYTE and SKELETON CREW underperformed, they pulled the plug on a bunch of streaming plans. The math stopped working. Too many Disney+ shows, not enough THE MANDALORIAN level hits.
THE MANDALORIAN season 4? Cancelled. Became a movie instead: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU. THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT season 2? Cancelled. Nobody even knew it was planned until Coyne spoke up. Everything got funneled into theaters again. Next up is Ryan Gosling’s STARFIGHTER next summer.
The 2024 strikes made it worse. Production halted, budgets got reviewed, and Lucasfilm decided to cut losses. If a show wasn’t printing money like THE MANDALORIAN season 1 and 2, it was gone. Even shows that were “in between” like THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT got axed.
My Take On The Cancellation
Look, I wasn’t mad at THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT. Mixed reviews, yeah. The pacing was weird and the Mando crossover episodes carried it. But it had moments. Boba trying to rule with respect instead of fear was interesting. Finding out season 2 was actually written and cast makes the cancellation sting more.
We could’ve seen Lord Janu Coin become a proper Mando-Verse villain instead of just movie bait. We could’ve gotten more of Tatooine politics, more Fennec Shand, more of that crime lord worldbuilding. Instead we got a hard reset.
Lucasfilm basically hit reset on all TV plans and said “back to theaters.” Whether that saves Star Wars or not… we’ll see with STARFIGHTER. But killing planned seasons feels wasteful. Those stories existed. Actors were ready. Fans were ready. Now it’s just “what if” material.
Rating this news: 6/10
More Boba = good. But killing it for another movie gamble? Risky. Especially when THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU results were just “mixed.”
