It's been barely more than a day since Disney and Lucasfilm announced Gina Carano's firing from The Mandalorian due to controversial social media posts, but she's hit back today via Deadline.
Despite being dropped by the Star Wars franchise, and her talent agency, Carano is forging ahead by developing and producing a movie of her own... and she'll be teaming up with controversial conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro to make it.
Lucasfilm described the actress's social media comments as "abhorrent," but there's absolutely no sign of an apology in the statement issued today.
"The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams - to develop and produce my own film - come true," the former Cara Dune says. "I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them."
This untitled movie will be released exclusively to members of The Daily Wire website; its first feature, Run Hide Fight, drew 300,000 viewers during a live-stream premiere, and this is likely as good as it will get for Carano now that her Hollywood career is seemingly at an end.
"We could not be more excited to be working with Gina Carano, an incredible talent dumped by Disney and Lucasfilm for offending the authoritarian Hollywood Left. This is what Daily Wire exists to do: provide an alternative not just for consumers, but for creators who refuse to bow to the mob," Shapiro says. "We’re eager to bring Gina’s talent to Americans who love her, and we’re just as eager to show Hollywood that if they want to keep cancelling those who think differently, they’ll just be helping us build the X-Wing to take down their Death Star."
We can't imagine this movie will be worth talking about (there's obviously no way it will have the same production values as The Mandalorian), but will keep you updated. Many predicted that a SYFY direct-to-TV movie might be on the cards, but it seems even that's out of Carano's reach now...
