In a recent blogpost, Bungie outlined the next chapter of Destiny. One major talking point is to rerelease and update vaulted campaigns to meet the current standards of New Light, giving players a chance to revisit the game’s lived history. However, bringing back that much content would exponentially increase file sizes. With the 10th anniversary of Destiny 2 coming up as well, Bungie could use this as an opportunity to split New Light into two experiences: Destiny 2 as celebration of the Light & Darkness Saga, and Destiny 3 as the foundation for expanding the Fate Saga.
Once the vaulted content has been brought back in (a) new light, Bungie could rebrand New Light back into Destiny 2 on the game's 10th anniversary in 2027. Similar to World of Warcraft Classic, it would function as an archive. This Anniversary Edition would preserve the campaigns (9), destinations (13), PvP modes (including Trials of Osiris & Gambit), and exotics from the Light & Darkness Saga. The Raids (7), Dungeons (7), Fireteam Activities (17), Strikes (23), Crucible maps (37), Gambit maps (6), Protocols (10) and Arenas (7) set in those destinations would also be included.
Next, Bungie could clone the New Light experience and use the content revolving around the IX as groundwork. Additionally, Bungie could fold in existing Destiny 3 plans and Destiny's remaining destinations (5), and the Raids (4), Dungeon (1), Fireteam activities (5), Strikes (15), Crucible maps (25), Sparrow Racing circuits (5) and Protocols (2) set within them. This allows them to keep building on New Light's technical foundation, and introduce a new onboarding campaign. Moving the matchmaking content also allows Bungie to discontinue support for the original game.
Lastly, the Leviathan and its activities can be made to return as part of a 10th Year Anniversary Pack. With that, Destiny 3 would have III campaigns, IX destinations (including Eternity), PvP modes (including Trials of the Nine & Sparrow Racing), and exotics. The destinations would also include Raids (7), Raid Lairs (2), Dungeons (4), Fireteam activities (7), Strikes (15), Crucible maps (28), Protocols (3) and Arenas (3) set within them. Most of the activities can be free to all players, while accessing endgame activities and exotics requires owning the respective expansion packs.
The new Destiny 3 campaign could update A Guardian Rises and the original’s Strikes (15) and Raids (4). The overarching narrative could have it be set between The Final Shape and Edge of Fate and be an investigation into Fallen’s renewed use of SIVA, Vex regrouping on Venus, Cabal rebuilding from Mars, and Hive worshipping Crota and Oryx on the Moon and the Dreadnaught. Each Strike would lead into the next, with Raids being each destination's culmination. This creates a natural progression from Fallen to Hive and Vex, from Vex to Cabal, and from Cabal back to Hive.
Destiny’s history could also be relived by adapting it for the big screen. While the games tell the player’s story, the movies could explore what happens when the Guardian never arrives. Destiny: The Taken King follows Amanda Holliday as she arrives in the Last City and helps Ana Bray clear the Skywatch. They discover a Hive infestation and seek Eris Morn’s aid on the Moon, where they defeat Crota and learn of Oryx’s arrival. They enlist the Awoken by defeating the traitorous Skolas, earning Mara Sov’s support. The Awoken join the fight, resulting in Oryx' defeat in the Black Garden.
Destiny: The Witch Queen starts with Uldren Sov staging a prison break and luring Cayde-6 into a trap to kill him. Amanda follows Uldren to the Dreaming City, where he attempts to free Mara from the Ascendant Realm. Instead, Savathûn emerges and kills Uldren. Amanda, unable to chase after her, seeks out Elsie and Drifter on Europa. After helping them steal Statis from Eramis, they receive a warning from the Witness. While Elsie and the Drifter go to confront a Light-wielding Savathûn, Amanda defends the Last City from Eramis, until Eris arrives to aid Savathûn and leaves the city in ruins.
Destiny: God of War Vengeance finally sees the Witness arrive, with former Cabal emperor Calus as its disciple. Calus travels to Neptune, with Amanda, Crow and Osiris in tow. There, he activates the veil, enabling the Witness to breach the Traveler. The Coalitions follows him, but only manages to defeat the Witness when his power is siphoned away. Amanda traces the energy to the Moon, where the Coalition discovers Xivu Arath and Eris, now a dark Hive god, being behind it. A final battle erupts, but ends when the Traveler suddenly erupts in light and sends Elsie back in time.
