We've been hearing whispers that a remake of classic Star Wars video game Knights of the Old Republic might be in the works, and Sony finally made it official during today's PlayStation Showcase.

It's only being developed as a PS5 exclusive for now, unfortunately, but it could reach other next-gen consoles down the line. It's also been confirmed that Aspyr will be developing the remaster, following their previous work on Republic Commando and Jedi Outcast.

An announcement teaser has been released, setting the scene with an ominous voiceover and a shot of Darth Revan igniting his lightsabre. "Peace is a lie... that is what the Sith believe. They promised power, now they wield it. We face the greatest Sith in generations. They must be stopped."

Set almost 4000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire, Knights of the Old Republic started out as a LucasArts game released in 2003, but there have since been a plethora of spinoff novels and comic books. It's still considered by many to be the best Star Wars game of all time.

A live-action adaptation has been something fans have been hoping to see for many years, but a few rumors aside, we still haven't had any solid updates on that front.

I would've already taken a remaster, though a remake us so much better.

So hope they're gonna make this canon. Sure they might change some lore and stuff, but this is [frick]ing great.

Damn it! No! We want 3!!! The first 2 games (while dated) are perfect. There really is no point to remaking it. We want a new story that moves this franchise forward! We wanna make a crew of Jedi (or Sith) with new content and modern gameplay.

What is the point of remaking it?

@ElricReturns - I agree, but we should also take note that if this remake is profitable, and it likely will be. There’s a much higher likelihood of getting that 3rd chapter.

KOTOR is a masterpiece, I can only guess how much Sony paid to get that away from Xbox.

@bkmeijer - oh no doubt. And especially that canonization part. And imma likely love this for many reasons, top of the list being my PS5 has a lack of titles right now making use of its power.

Kotor got me into the crpg genre of turn based combat games. Do you think they will keep the gameplay and story the same? I hope so.

@MuadDib - true. But if this is successful they will likely remake 2, which will take who knows how long. Then however long it takes to make a 3rd.

I just would have preferred this be the announcement of the 3rd game.

@NathimusPrime - Probably only a timed exclusive. Xbox and PC fans just have to wait anywhere from 1-3 years for it. They didn't specify but maybe its for all platforms like the Call of Duty games but PlayStation just gets 1st dibs on all DLC and micro transactions.

Death loop is a timed exclusive too which will arrive 1 year later on all platforms.

@ElricReturns - Not of they screw with it. This thing needs to be turn based, which I bet it won't be.

As much as I liked FF7 Remake, it just wasn't the same feeling.

@CorndogBurglar - that's my fear too. I'm an avid CRPG gamer and KOTOR brought me into the genre. But if the gameplay is fluid and slick and still incorporates every single move available in the original.... maybe they do a hybrid Dragon Age Inquisition thing and do combat that let's you also pause gameplay to go tactical. That was sorta what the OG was.

@ElricReturns - Yeah, Dragon Age tried to do what they did with KOTOR, but they never really seemed to nail it like with KOTOR. KOTOR's tactical side was far better. Dragon Age was difficult to queue up several actions per character to let them play out. I personally don't like any of the Dragon Age games.

But you said you like CRPG's? I've played pretty much all of them from Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape, and even the newer ones like Pillars of Eternity and Divinity Original Sin. But I'm playing through Pathfinder: Kingmaker right now, and it is by far my favorite of any of them. If you haven't played it I highly recommend it. It's turn-based, has a VERY in depth levelling system, and is absolutely gorgeous.

@CorndogBurglar - it just became available for free on the Playstation Pass, and im currently finishing a play through of Divinity 2 to start it. From everything I've watched about it, it looks amazing.
