24: Kiefer Sutherland Would Return As Jack Bauer But Has Some Bold Ideas About Rebooting The Franchise

Jack Bauer remains Kiefer Sutherland's most iconic role, but would the actor be open to playing the former CTU agent again in a 24 revival? Yes, though he also has some bold ideas about a franchise reboot!

While 24 definitely started going downhill after the show's stellar fifth season, it was still undeniably enjoyable to follow Jack Bauer's story. That ended in the UK-set Live Another Day with the former CTU agent being helicoptered away by the Russians in exchange for Chloe's life, and the prevailing theory is that Jack was likely facing a death sentence.

The series was later brought back as 24: Legacy, but without Bauer front and centre, fans simply weren't interested.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly (via ActioNewz.com), Sutherland revealed whether he would be open to reprising the role. Describing 24 as "the best time of my life," he added that, "It was incredibly special for me and I would like to see it continue on."

What does he think a continuation should look like, though?

"[Showrunner] Howard [Gordon] and I talk all the time and invariably it comes up," he teased. "The idea of him being brought back — I'm just spitballing — I think that's an interesting idea. You introduce a new cast of people in their effort to get him out, and it lives on from that point. There's a lot of ways to go about it."

"I also think it's such a great idea to take a 24-hour moment in somebody's life that is desperate — and that could be a fireman; that could be so many different circumstances," Sutherland continued. "I just think that to do something in real time is so clever — difficult, but clever — that I find it kind of shocking that it hasn't manifested itself into something else and/or bigger."

He concluded by pointing out, "I'm not more interested in one idea versus another," explaining that he believes 24 is a property with real franchise potential no matter what form it takes.

It seems we'll have to wait and see, but the clock is definitely ticking when it comes to the possibility of Sutherland playing Jack again. Fans deserve a proper ending to the character's story, but the actor isn't wrong when he says the 24-hour format could be used in a very different way too.

What do you guys think?

Personally, once you get past the gimmick of the show, there was nothing about it that stood out for me as something worth bringing back

He's right there are more professions they could follow in the 24 hour setting. Think a Coast Guard 24 or Mountain Rescue 24 could work too.

That said, his premise for a new Jack Bauer season is pretty interesting as well.

Keifer Sutherland man... Intimidating af. He ain't even a big guy or anything, he's just got a deep voice and a stern look.

24 should have ended with Season 7; Season 5 is said to be the best but then it had that huge cliffhanger, Season 6 then ended up being a parody of itself but 7 made up for it, with that great ending where Jack is dying but at peace with himself...plus it gives you hope that his daughter can save him. Season 8 and 9 were just not needed

I think in a few more years it could be great to bring it back.

Jack's some near mythical figure to the CTU, times have changed and the organisation is basically a different beast. Introduce some world ending stakes with a brand new cast that decide they need to go rogue and rescue Bauer from the Chinese. Like a late season reveal. Then 2 episodes of Jack kicking ass.

I honestly just want a proper final season that gives the character a definitive end.
Being locked up in a russian prison was pretty anticlimactic.

Make a final season or movie that sees Tony join up with a group of soldiers and use Chloe as their tech to break Jack out.
Idk just finish the story

He was awesome in Phone Booth. Great vocal-only performance.

Yes! That would be awesome. More Kiefer and Jack Bauer is always a good thing. I would love to see a 24 reboot and think it would work. Kiefer needs to make other action projects. His mini series The Confession was pretty interesting. I think they are on to something with doing other stories following a day in the life of. If they do that call it something other than 24.

I am all in for this. More Jack Bauer would be great!

24 Legacy was such a turkey. All the Hollywood nuts went wild when they cast a black guy as lead. Before it even came out, they were babbling all about make Superman black, make James Bond black, etc. That is fine if they deliver a great project. When they do it just to virtue signal & roll out a lousy product, it hurts diversity as opposed to helping it.

Like Halle Berry Catwoman & 24 Legacy.
